McGuinness and Connolly head presidential betting
Bertie Ahern has seen his odds of taking up residence in Áras an Uachtaráin this year slashed into just 6/1 (from 16/1) with BOYLE Sports after he topped an opinion poll of potential candidates.
The survey of voters by Ireland Thinks/Sunday Independent puts the former Taoiseach at the top of the list of potential Fianna Fáil candidates at 24%, triggering a flurry of betting activity that now makes Ahern the fourth favourite to succeed Michael D Higgins.
Mairead McGuinness continues to head the betting at odds of 6/5 having secured the Fine Gael nomination, with Labour-endorsed Independent TD Catherine Connolly (2/1) also featuring prominently on the shortlist of oddsmakers.
Interest Remains In Mary Lou McDonald
Sunday’s opinion poll has also ensured that Mary Lou McDonald, who has already refused to rule herself out of joining the race, remains a hot topic of conversation. The Sinn Féin president is an 11/2 chance with 38% voting her as favourite to secure the party’s nomination, with outsiders Michelle O’Neill (25%) and Gerry Adams (20%) 40/1 and 66/1 shots respectively.
Brian O’Keeffe, spokesperson for BOYLE Sports, said:
“The latest opinion poll has once again stirred the presidential pot and while Mairead McGuinness remains a red-hot favourite, the wind is firmly in the sails of Bertie Ahern according to plenty of punters.”
