Benfica v Bayern Preview

Benfica’s Form

Benfica qualified for the Club World Cup to be one of a dozen UEFA teams competing in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup as the seventh-best ranked eligible team in the four-year ranking. This season, they finished runner-up in the Primeira Liga, 2 points behind league winners Sporting. They did win the Taça da Liga, beating Sporting 6-7 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at the start of the year, though they were undone by Sporting again in May, losing 1-3 in the Taça de Portugal AET.

There is a nice blend of youth and experience. Di Maria (37) is back at the club where he first announced himself on the European Stage, and Sanches (27) is no longer the “wonderkid” he once was and brings experience from across Europe, also including with Bayern and PSG. Elsewhere, vice-captain Silva (21) is among the best young defenders in Europe, as well as keeper Trubin (23) is in front of him in net.

Benfica has been managed by Bruno Lage since September and will approach this game with a high, intensive-based press as well as a possession-based style. It’ll be interesting to see how it matches up against a higher-quality Bayern side,

Bayern’s Form

Following an end to their consecutive title-winning streak in 23/24, when they were denied their 12th in a row by Leverkusen. They returned to the summit of the Bundesliga, finishing 13 points ahead of defending champions Leverkusen. Elsewhere, they also reached the Quarter-Finals of the Champions League before being eliminated by finalists Inter.

Bayern have one of the most well-rounded and talented squads in European Football at the moment, and it should be noted that their European exit to Inter came with some major issues. However, their squad looks in a far better position in this tournament and with names like Musiala, Olise and Kane spearheading the attack and Upamecano and Kimmich in defence, they could go very far in this competition.

Kompany has set Bayern up in an attacking style with a 2-4-4 formation in possession, encouraging wingers to stay wide and midfielders to dominate, leading Bayern to a dominant Bundesliga title win in his first season.

Key Players To Watch

Vangelis Pavlidis - Benfica

The one to watch for Benfica is Greek International Vangelis Pavlidis (26), who signed for the club ahead of this season following a prolific period with AZ in the Netherlands, where he scored 80 Goals and assisted 27 in 137 Games.

He’s taken that form to the Portuguese giants, scoring 30 Goals and assisting 13 from his first 55 at the club, including a Goal and an Assist in his opening 2 games at this tournament. Pavlidis causes opposition defence issues with his intelligent movement and his progressive dribbling ability. He can be gotten at 11/2 to score first or 2/1 to score anytime.

Pavlidis anytime goal - 15/8

Harry Kane – Bayern Munich

This Club World Cup will be the conclusion of Kane’s second season with Bayern since moving to the club in search of trophies. However, despite 44 Goals and 12 Assists in 45 Games in his opening season, silverware still alluded him.

The 24/25 season was always going to be another chance at that for Kane, and finally, with Bayern reclaiming the Bundesliga this season, he won the first trophy of his career. This season he has 39 Goals and 14 Assists in 48 Games, including 1 Goal and 1 Assist in 2 Club World Cup Games. If you fancy him to score in this game, he is 7/2 to score first and 5/4 to score anytime.

Kane first goal - 7/2

Benfica v Bayern Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Benfica 0-2 Bayern

Benfica have plenty of quality in their squad, and though they have never beaten Bayern, they only lost by a sole goal at the end of last year.

Bayern are one of the competition front-runners for a reason, and it’s hard to see them not winning this game.

I’m not expecting Benfica to be battered, but I do think Bayern will be comfortable.

Best Bet: Bayern – 10/11
