BBC SPOTY Favourites
Rory McIlroy
McIlroy the major contender
Rory McIlroy is favourite to cap an historic year by being named BBC Sports Personality of the Year for the first time later this month but he faces stiff competition from the likes of Chloe Kelly and Lando Norris.
McIlroy was SPOTY runner-up to Lewis Hamilton in 2014, the year the Northern Irishman won the PGA Championship and Open, and he was also among the nominees in 2011, 2012 and 2013 without finishing in the top three.
But the 36-year-old is evens with BOYLE Sports to walk away with the prestigious honour at the BBC awards ceremony at Media City in Salford on Thursday, December 18 after a stellar season.
In April, McIlroy finally ended his long wait to become only the sixth player to win all four majors, dramatically completing his career grand slam at the Masters following a sudden-death play-off win over Justin Rose.
McIlroy then led Europe to a successful Ryder Cup defence over the USA at a fiery Bethpage Black, before capturing a seventh Race to Dubai title.
Lionesses
Pride of Lionesses
McIlroy’s closest challenger to be named Sports Personality looks to be England and Arsenal forward Kelly, who can be backed at 2/1 to become the third Lioness in four years to win the award, which is decided by a public vote on the night from a shortlist selected by experts.
If Kelly tops the polls she would follow in the footsteps of fellow England stars Beth Mead (2022) and Mary Earps (2023). She would also become the fourth successive female winner with Emma Raducanu (2021) and Keely Hodgkinson (2024) also honoured.
The 27-year-old has enjoyed another memorable year on the pitch, returning to Arsenal in January and helping them win the Women’s Champions League before playing a key role as England clinched back-to-back European Championship titles in the summer.
Kelly, who famously scored the winning goal in England’s historic Euro 2022 final win over Germany, netted a 119th-minute decider in this year’s semi-final against Italy and also slotted home the winning penalty in the final shootout against Spain.
England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton, who saved penalties from Mariona Caldentey and Aitana Bonmati as the Lionesses won 3-1 in the shootout, is also in the running to win SPOTY and is rated fifth favourite at 16/1 by BOYLE Sports.
England’s nerve-wracking win over the world champions was watched by 12.2million viewers, making it the most-watched TV moment of the year.
Best of the rest
Lando Norris
Third in the SPOTY running is currently Lando Norris, who is 9/2 to top the voting.
The Englishman is on track to win his maiden Formula One title, having finished runner-up to Max Verstappen last season, and the McLaren driver’s SPOTY stock could rise further over the coming weeks.
Luke Littler
Teenage darts sensation Luke Littler is 10/1 to go one better than 12 months ago, where he was second to Hodgkinson after a breakthrough year.
In 2025, the 18-year-old became the youngest world champion in history and rose to number one in the world with victory in the Grand Slam of Darts.
Scott McTominay
The other member of the top six is Scotland and Napoli star Scott McTominay, although his odds have drifted from 33/1 to 66/1 as McIlroy and Kelly lead the charge.
