Atlético Madrid v Feyenoord Preview

Atlético Madrid’s Form

Simeone’s side are looking to improve on their performances in this competition last season where they were eliminated at the Group Stage after finishing bottom of a group which was more than winnable with Porto, Club Brugge and Bayer Leverkusen.

However, they opened their 23/24 campaign disappointingly drawing 1-1 with Lazio after conceding a late 95th minute goal to lose the opportunity for an opening night victory. The draw was probably the fair result though with Lazio creating an XG of 1.2 to their 0.9.

During the summer, there were a few notable departures: Renan Lodo signed for Marseille for €14.00m, the expiration of Reguilón’s loan and the recent transfer of Carrasco to Saudi side Al Shabab for €15.00m were the biggest losses. They have recruited experience from the Premier League and three players from around La Liga, but this club is more about the system and the man in the dugout, and I’d entrust his judgement over signing any potential hidden gems.

They’re in solid league form so far this season with five wins, one draw and one defeat from their opening seven games including three games won in a row with the most recent being their victory on Sunday 3-2 against Cadiz. Their eighteen goals scored is the joint second-most scored along with Girona and one less than Barcelona and their seven conceded is only bettered by Real Madrid with six.

Feyenoord’s Form

The Dutch outfit had an excellent 22/23 season where they won the Eredivisie and reached the semi-final of the KNVB Cup and the Quarter-Final of the Europa League. Such was their performance last year that Manager Arne Slot was coveted by Tottenham before he turned down Levy’s approach to stay.

Thus, Slot was backed well during the summer Transfer Window with a huge amount of changes in playing staff at all levels of the club with 25 incomings and 26 departures Their major departures were CM Orkun Kökcü who went to Benfica for €25.00m and CF Danilo who went to Rangers for €6.30m. It should be noted that several players were signed from Premier League academies on either full or loan deals. The signing of Calvin Stengs from Nice for just €6.00m could be the pick of the business though.

Feyenoord are in flying form, despite a slow start to their league season with two draws, they have won their last five Eredivisie games played with their most recent result being a 3-1 victory over Go Ahead Eagles. However, the start of their rivals means that run of form only has them fourth, and trailing PSV who have a perfect seven from seven by four points.

Feyenoord currently tops Group E following their opening night victory 2-0 against Celtic. If they avoid defeat here they’ll already be in a solid position for qualification with just two games played.

Atlético Madrid vs Feyenoord Head-To-Head

In recent years Atletico Madrid and Feyenoord have faced off just once. That match came in a club friendly on the 8th of August 2021. Feyenoord won that friendly game 2-1.

Atlético Madrid v Feyenoord Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Atlético Madrid 2-1 Feyenoord

Atlético will be looking to get their first victory of the Group Stage following their disappointing result against Lazio last time out. They’re in strong form too with four wins in their last five league games.

Feyenoord are even in better form following their 2-0 victory over Celtic they currently sit top of the group and their five league wins in a row have them looking up to the table with them five points clear of the team directly below them in fifth place.

Home advantage should be crucial here and I’d expect Atlético to do the business.

Best Bet: Atlético Madrid Win and Over 1.5 Goals @ EVS
