Aston Villa v PSG Preview

Aston Villa’s Form

Since Unai Emery was appointed in November 2022, Aston Villa have become one of the most consistent sides in not just the Premier League but also in Europe. In his first full season, they finished 4th in the league and reached the Europa Conference League semi-final. This season they’ve continued to balance both Domestic and European commitments. With just 6 league games left, they’re 7th and just 3 points behind Nottingham Forrest in third following their 0-3 win over  Southampton at the weekend.

In the first leg, Villa took an unlikely lead through Rogers in the 35th minute sending their travelling supporters into ecstasy. However, it didn’t last long with Doué equalising sensationally in the 39th minute before a moment of magic from Kvaratskhelia and 92nd minute cherry on the top from Mendes. Villa were only able to hold 25% of possession and had 7 shots for an XG of 0.74 to PSG’s 29 shots and XG of 1.95. They will expect to have slightly better of things at home.

Villa shouldn’t be underestimated and if they can score an early goal on Tuesday Night and play on the counter this tie could be far from dead.

PSG’s Form

PSG have dominated domestically for over a decade with their victory this season fourth title in a row and 11th in the last 12 seasons as well as a Trophée des Champions victory earlier this season. Despite blinding riches, superstar signings and more pumped into the club than the average country the Champions League still alludes them.

However, even though  Mbappé departed for Madrid last summer it arguably made their squad more balanced than ever before. Their 3-1 win over Aston Villa in the first leg of the tie was a stupendous performance. In a sport which has become increasingly robotic, it's almost ironic that a club which used to be so widely disliked is entertaining the masses with their style of football with the front three of Doué, Dembélé and Kvaratskhelia the best about right now.

There’s still a job to be done in this tie and Villa are well positioned to cause anyone issues on any given day and Unai Emery knows PSG well adding further intrigue to this quarter-final.

Key Players To Watch

Marcus Rashford - Aston Villa

There’s very little to say that hasn’t been said when it comes to Marcus Rashford (27) both in a positive and negative sense. However, the one thing that can’t be dismissed is despite his clear talent, his stock has fallen considerably, which is why he was sent to Aston Villa on loan.

Rashford is a confidence player and he looks to be slowly growing again with 3 goals and 5 assists across 14 games since signing for Aston Villa. Though he did not perform in the first leg he has a history with PSG and with speculation of a move to Paris in the summer, he can be gotten at 7/1 to score first or 5/2 to score at any point.

Ousmane Dembele – PSG

There are few footballers with the raw talent that the PSG attacker (27) has and it’s important not to forget that Barcelona once paid €135.00m for his services from Dortmund back in 2017. Although he’s struggled with consistency and fitness when at his best it’s easy to see why Barcelona once valued him so highly. Everything he does then is to a world-class standard with pace, skill and an elite level of dribbling ability while having the end product to provide assists and score goals.

This season he’s taken the mantle as the main man for PSG scoring 32 times and assisting 10 across 41 games in all competitions. In the Champions League, that record is 7 goals and assisted twice in 11 matches. He is 9/2 to score first or 7/5 to score any time.

Dembele first goal - 9/2

Aston Villa v PSG Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Aston Villa 0-2 PSG

Aston Villa need a big performance if they’re to avoid defeat not to mind get back in the tie but it isn’t out of the question.

PSG have shown they can dominate, they can come from behind but their next question is if they can hold onto a lead against a harder opponent.

I fancy the away side at EVS they remain a solid bet.
