Aston Villa v Celtic Preview

Aston Villa’s Form

Aston Villa under Unai Emery have become one of the most consistent sides around for both their Domestic and European form. Last season they qualified for this competition by finishing 4th in the league and a Conference League Semi-Final.

They’ve balanced both Domestic and European commitments well so far this season especially considering they had a net spend of €-32.50m during the summer window.

Villa have swiftly put doubters of their Champions League credentials aside with three successive victories 0-3 over Young Boys, 1-0 over Bayern and 2-0 over Bologna.

In recent fixtures, they’ve found it more difficult though with a 1-0 defeat against Club Brugge, a 0-0 home draw against Juventus and a thrilling 2-3 victory over an out-of-form RB Leipzig. However, their recent 1-0 loss to Monaco last week means they’re currently outside the automatic round of 16 places.

Despite their slip-ups in the last week, Villa are a strong side and should get the job done in this game to win.

Celtic’s Form

Celtic claimed another domestic double in the 23/24 season, but it was another Group Stage elimination in the Champions League which removed the gloss on their season.

They currently lead the SPL by thirteen points clear of bitter rivals Rangers twenty-three games into the season which means another league title could be on the cards in the coming months. Furthermore, the change in the Champions League format has given them their best chance of competing in Europe in arguably over a decade.

Celtic opened their Champions League journey taking full advantage of the new format beating Slovan Bratislava 5-1 but were dealt their seasonal hammer blow in the competition in the second matchday losing 7-1 to Dortmund.

Since that defeat though they’ve gone undefeated drawing 0-0 away to Atalanta, beating Leipzig 3-1 and drawing 1-1 at home against Club Brugge in their next three games. Most recently they drew 0-0 against Dinamo in Zagreb and won 1-0 against Young Boys last week at home.

Celtic are into the knockouts but will be hoping to get into a seeded playoff with another win.

Aston Villa v Celtic Head-To-Head Results & Stats

This is the first meeting between both sides.

Key Players To Watch

Ollie Watkins – Aston Villa

While not performing at quite the levels of last season Aston Villa’s biggest attacking threat Watkins has continued his form from the 23/24 season with 10 goals and 8 assists from 31 games in all competitions and his pace, finishing and link-up play is crucial to the Aston Villa attack.

Ollie Watkins first goal – 10/3

Bet Here

He is 10/3 to be the first goal scorer and EVS to score any time.

Adam Idah – Celtic

Since initially signing on loan for the club in February 2024, Idah now (23) was thrust into the Parkhead spotlight and came under considerable criticism for not being at the perceived required standard by Celtic “supporters”. However, he quickly silenced the doubters scoring 9 goals in 19 games which earned him a permanent move the next summer.

Adam Idah anytime goal – 3/1

However, a new challenge is on the way with Kyogo departing, Maeda suspended and other underperforming Idah is likely to get the main starting striker role for this game and will be looking to add to his tally of 8 in 33 this season so far. He is priced at 10/1 to score first and 10/3 to score anytime.

Aston Villa v Celtic Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Aston Villa 2-0 Celtic

Aston Villa are as dangerous as any side on their day and could be potential dark horses to win this competition for the first time since 1982.

Celtic have taken full advantage of the new format and could be poised for their best run in the competition in some time though an outright success like 1967 is likely a bridge too far.

An intriguing first time meeting between two teams with a history in the competition but I think the English outfit should be too good on this occasion.
