Arsenal v PSG Preview

Arsenal’s Form

Arteta’s Arsenal are without a “major” trophy since their 2-1 win over Chelsea in the 2020 FA Cup final. The improvements under Arteta have been considerable, but another trophy is required, or questions will start to be asked about the direction of the management without any trophies. However, with the Premier League now out of reach for them, they will be able to put all their efforts into the Champions League, where they have their best chance of success in nearly two decades.

Following a weekend break, it’ll be close to a week since their 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace, which ended their Premier League title aspirations for another season. They were arguably fortunate to even get that point with Crystal Palace accumulating an XG of 2.51 to their 1.92. However, that draw still extended their unbeaten run to 12 matches in all competitions since their 0-1 loss to West Ham at the beginning of February.

There seems to be more of a steeliness about this Arsenal side, and they head into this game knowing that they were comfortable in their 2-0 win over them earlier in the competition.

PSG’s Form

PSG have dominated domestically for over a decade, with their victory this season making it their fourth title in a row and 11th in the last 12 seasons, as well as a Trophée des Champions victory earlier this season. Despite blinding riches, superstar signings and more pumped into the club than the average country, the Champions League still eludes them.

Though Mbappé departed for Madrid last summer, it arguably made their squad more balanced than ever before. While they faced a scare in the second leg against Aston Villa in the previous round and were beaten in Ligue 1 last weekend but you still get the impression this PSG side are in as strong of a place as ever. It's ironic that a club which used to be so widely disliked is entertaining the masses with their style of football, with the front three of Doué, Dembélé and Kvaratskhelia the best about right now.

PSG were beaten by Arsenal earlier in the competition, but still have every chance in this tie, especially if they can avoid another defeat at the Emirates Stadium.

Key Players To Watch

Bukayo Saka – Arsenal

The Hale End Football Academy Graduate has become a crucial component of Arsenal’s rise in competitive stature under Mikel Arteta. While he first broke through as a flying Left-Back in 2018 he has since transitioned into one of the most productive Right-Wingers in World Football and at only 23 he could have a decade of top-level football ahead of him.

Bukayo Saka first goalscorer – 13/2

Bet Here

Despite injury issues, Saka still has an excellent record of 11 Goals and 14 Assists in 31 matches this season. He is 13/2 to be the first goal scorer and 9/4 to score anytime.

Ousmane Dembele – PSG

There are few footballers with the raw talent that the PSG attacker (27) has and it’s important not to forget that Barcelona once paid €135.00m for his services from Dortmund back in 2017. Although he’s struggled with consistency and fitness when at his best it’s easy to see why Barcelona once valued him so highly. Everything he does then is to a world-class standard with pace, skill and an elite level of dribbling ability while having the end product to provide assists and score goals.

Ousmane Dembele anytime goal – 9/4

Bet Here

This season he’s taken the mantle as the main man for PSG scoring 32 times and assisting 12 across 44 games. In the Champions League, that record is 7 goals and 3 assists in 12 matches. He is 13/2 to score first or 9/4 to score any time.

Arsenal v PSG Prediction

Prediction: Arsenal 1-1 PSG

This is Arsenal’s final chance of a major trophy this season and have already shown they can beat PSG at home in this competition.

PSG may have lost at the weekend but their Ligue 1 title had already been secured and they will be a different animal in this game.

I can see this tie going either way, but PSG might just scrape a crucial draw in the first leg.
