Form Guide

Armenia’s Form Guide

Former Armenian International Yegishe Melikyan has been the Manager of his national side since assuming the position last month after leaving FC Pyunik, where he coached for four seasons and guided them to two Armenian Premier League titles. He is now tasked with bringing them to their first International Tournament.

Interestingly, Armenia had already appointed a manager earlier this year in Dutchman John van 't Schip, who came in last February but had his contract terminated last month by mutual consent after four games without a win. The new manager received a baptism of fire in his opening game when they lost 0-5 to Portugal on Saturday.

Following the retirement of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, it’s fair to say there aren’t many standout names in the Armenian squad. Tigran Barseghyan is their likely dangerman, though, with his productivity eye-catching at club level. Elsewhere, Rubin Kazan midfielder Ugochukwu Iwu should provide defensive solidity in the middle of the park.

Republic of Ireland’s Form Guide

Ahead of their opening World Cup qualifier against Hungary, there was a huge amount of simultaneous hope and expectation for the campaign. Those feelings nearly evaporated before they could even get going, though, as they fell to a 0-2 deficit only 15 minutes into the game. Had it not been for their second-half fight-back and a goal from Ferguson and a late leveller from Idah, their campaign could’ve been over before it got going.

Following a few dubious selection calls and tactical decisions from  Heimir Hallgrímsson for the game against Hungary. He can be simultaneously criticised for getting it wrong in the beginning, but can also be praised for making the decisions which ultimately helped them rescue the draw. The stats following the game of Ireland with 67% of possession, 23 shots for an XG of 2.75 to Hungary’s 9 for 1.74 tell its own story.

How Heimir now chooses to approach Tuesday’s game will signify if he’s learned from his mistakes. Will late call-up and Shamrock Rovers defender Honohan get the nod over an underperforming Doherty? Will it be wing-backs or wingers? Does Heimir partner Idah with Ferguson, and what does that mean for the system? All will be revealed on Tuesday, but I do think we could see a far more attacking side and system..

Key Players To Watch

Key Players To Watch

Tigran Barseghyan- Armenia

The Slovan Bratislava winger (31) is a productive force at the club and international level, and this season with the former, he has 2 goals and 4 assists in 11 games and just 753 minutes. For Armenia, he has 9 goals and 14 assists in 61 caps and was recently appointed captain of his country.

Evan Ferguson - Republic of Ireland

Evan continued his strong start to the season at the weekend against Hungary, where he was one of their better performers. His early goal in the 49th minute was huge in helping Ireland take the grip of the second half, but he was an effective outlet throughout. His 6 goals and 1 assist for Ireland in 23 caps and 1,313 minutes is going under the radar for someone still so young at 20.

Armenia vs ROI Prediction & Best Bet

Armenia v Republic of Ireland Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Armenia 0-2 Republic of Ireland

Armenia were expectantly outclassed by Portugal at the weekend, but will go into this fixture far more confident of pulling off an upset like they did a little over 3 years ago.

Ireland were shell shocked in the opening 15 minutes on Saturday, but showed resilience to snatch a draw and almost a win at the Aviva Stadium against Hungary saving their early qualification hopes.

More will be expected of Ireland in this one and a professional victory will be the absolute minimum requirement with the knowledge that the more comprehensive of a win they can achieve, the more it could assist their goal difference in the long-term and likely their playoff hopes.
