In this post, we bring you an Armagh v Mayo prediction plus all the odds, tips, and a best bet as we preview this Allianz National Football League clash.

Armagh welcome Mayo to the Athletic Grounds this Saturday evening with both sides sitting in the bottom half of the table after 3 rounds of the National League.

As we reach the halfway mark in the league, both sides will be determined to get another 2 points on the board here to boost their Division 1 survival chances. Breathing space from the relegation zone will allow these sides to experiment with their lineups more by giving opportunities to younger players as we get closer to the start of the Championship.

Armagh’s Form

Armagh’s 2025 Results

Galway 1-12 0-09 Armagh | Pearse Stadium | Allianz National League Round 1

Armagh 1-23 0-18 Tyrone | Box-IT Athletic Grounds | Allianz National League Round 2

Donegal 0-21 1-10 Armagh | Ballybofey | Allianz National League Round 3

Analysis

It has been an up-and-down start for Armagh to the 2025 season. They began this year’s campaign with a rematch against Galway in Pearse Stadium where they never really seemed to get out of second gear and were put away fairly comfortably by the Galwegians. Padraic Joyce’s troops were always going to be favourites for that game in Salthill with the extra motivation of the All-Ireland loss. However, it was the nature of the defeat that raised the question as to whether this was going to be an ‘All-Ireland hangover year’ for the Orchard County.

The second round saw Armagh show the quality which led them to Sam Maguire glory last season as they hit Tyrone for 1-23. Kieran McGeeney’s men flew out of the blocks and from the first few minutes until the final whistle the result was never in any real doubt.

Next up was a trip to Ballybofey to renew their rivalry with Donegal. After a slow start which saw them in a 7-point hole, they fought their way back to reduce the margin between the teams to just 2 points.

Then Donegal legend Michael Murphy made his return to intercounty football and things quickly changed. Murphy was not only greeted by a roaring ovation from the Tír Chonaill faithful but also by Armagh captain Aidan Forker who had a moment of madness when he decided to imitate Zinedine Zidane’s famous World Cup final headbutt. A red card followed for Forker and Donegal, led by Murphy went on to close out the game with ease thanks to the help of their one-man advantage.

What can we expect from Armagh this time around against a Mayo team coming off their opening win of the season? More specifically, will we get good Armagh or bad Armagh? At their best, they can surely beat this Mayo team with points to spare. On the positive side, from an Armagh perspective, their only win and best performance of the season to date did come on home turf and that’s where they’ll return to this Saturday for this game.

Mayo’s Form

Mayo’s 2025 Results

Dublin 1-17 1-15 Mayo | Croke Park, Dublin | Allianz National League Round 1

Mayo 0-16 0-26 Galway | MacHale Park, Mayo | Allianz National League Round 2

Mayo 0-12 0-10 Tyrone | MacHale Park, Mayo | Allianz National League Round 3

Analysis

Mayo have been poor to start this season. They’ve struggled to adapt to the new rules and for my money, they have been the worst team in Division 1 after 3 rounds of action. It begs the question as to whether this side is just not suited to the rule changes (or ‘enhancements’ as the Football Review Committee likes to call them). Or have the management team got the tactics and strategy wrong in their attempts to get to grips with the new rules? Or maybe it’s just February and we are reading too much into things at this early stage in the season.

Kevin McStay’s side started their 2025 campaign with a 2-point loss to Dublin in Croke Park. Even though they lost the game there were plenty of positives to take from it as they clawed their way back from a sizeable early deficit and saw promising returns from some of their younger players. None more than Breaffy’s Davitt Neary who has been the biggest bright spark for the county in an otherwise disappointing start to the season. Neary looks on course to nail down a starting spot in the half-forward line for the Championship. Jordan Flynn surely takes the other wing forward spot with the 11 jersey being up for grabs.

Galway were next on the agenda in MacHale Park. The home team were 1 point up at the break but that was a deceiving scoreline as they had the benefit of a strong wind behind them. Galway took advantage of said wind in the second period and with some great attacking play, and plenty of indiscipline from Mayo, they stormed to a 10-point victory. That was likely the worst performance we’ve seen from this Mayo side in the Kevin McStay era.

Round 3 saw Tyrone make the trip to Castlebar and with the home side badly in need of 2 league points they duly delivered. It wasn’t pretty however with a final scoreline of 0-12 to 0-10 reflective of what was a really poor game in terms of a spectacle and overall quality. Mayo did what they needed to do but that performance would hardly fill any Mayo fan with confidence ahead of the team’s trip to the Athletic Grounds this Saturday.

Armagh v Mayo Head-To-Head

2023 | Armagh 0-17 0-17 Mayo | Allianz Football League D1 R1

2022 | Mayo 0-15 Armagh 1-10 | Allianz Football League D1 R4

2019 | Mayo 2-13 Armagh 1-15 | All-Ireland Qualifiers

We haven’t had too many Armagh v Mayo clashes in recent times. However, the ones we have had have been tightly contested affairs. To that point, the last time these teams met was in the 2023 National League when they played out to a draw in the Athletic Grounds. The year prior, in 2022, Mayo secured a 2-point home win.

The last time these teams squared off in the heat of the Championship was in 2019 when Mayo did just enough to earn a 1-point win in a back-and-forth All-Ireland qualifier game in Castlebar.

The 2019 result holds little relevance to this game with both teams undergoing drastic changes in the years since then. The 2023 and, to a lesser extent, the 2022 matchups do hold some weight with plenty of players who are set to line out on Saturday having played big parts in those encounters. Going by recent history this upcoming game will be a tight affair.

Man of the Match Tip: Jordan Flynn – 25/1

Jordan Flynn looks like a standout value pick at 25/1 for TG4 Man of the Match in this clash between Armagh and Mayo. Fresh off leading Crossmolina to an All-Ireland Intermediate title, Flynn is in flying form and should be hitting full stride after shaking off any intercounty rust last weekend.

He was initially named on the bench against Tyrone but ended up starting, and now that he’s listed in his usual wing-forward role, expect him to be even sharper and fully in sync with Mayo’s attacking play. Since Kevin McStay took charge, Flynn has been one of Mayo’s most consistent performers, offering a blend of physicality and scoring threat that makes him a nightmare for opposition defences.

The new rule changes should also play right into Flynn’s hands. His ability to kick from distance was on full display last weekend when he nailed a two-pointer against Tyrone and I’d expect his long-range shooting to be a crucial weapon here against Armagh as he adjusts to the new rules.

Additionally, the new kick-out rules should highlight his strength in the air, as he’s a dominant presence in the middle third who can win primary possession and set Mayo on the front foot. If he plays to his potential, he could have a game-changing influence, making his 25/1 odds look too good to pass up.

Armagh v Mayo Prediction – 2025 Allianz Football League

Prediction: Armagh 1-16 Mayo 2-14

I’m predicting that Mayo will win this game by the narrowest of margins and pull off the upset as away underdogs.

Recent history between these two teams suggests to us that this will be a tight affair with no more than 2 points separating these teams in their previous 3 meetings.

Mayo have gotten off to a slow start in the league, and while their attack wasn’t inspiring last weekend in their win against Tyrone, the return of Aidan O’Shea to the mix, Jordan Flynn getting back up to intercounty speed, young Davitt Neary hitting the ground running, a man of the match display from Frank Irwin plus an industrious as ever Ryan O’Donoghue gives me reason to believe they can put up a score against what has been a leaky Armagh defence.

The defensive structure was also a positive for Mayo last time out with just 10 points conceded, a very low return given the 2-pointer and more end-to-end play style that exists now with the new rules.

Armagh have been inconsistent to start the league with more bad than good to this point. At their best, I think they win this game but I have little confidence we’ll see their best on Saturday evening and the bigger problem for me is their 8/15 favourites tag, it's hard to justify it.
