In this post, we bring you an Armagh v Galway prediction plus all the odds as we preview the 2024 All-Ireland Football Final.
This Sunday we have an All-Ireland final matchup that no one would have expected prior to the season. Armagh will take on Galway with both counties bidding to end a 20+ year wait for All-Ireland football glory.
This is a Galway team that is no stranger to this stage of the Championship having lost in the 2022 final to Kerry. Galwegians will be hoping that this experience stands to their players come Sunday afternoon.
Armagh, on the other hand, can not count on such experience as this team had been perennial underachievers in the Championship having bowed out in the previous two years at the quarter-final stage on penalties.
So who will walk up the steps of the Hogan Stand and hoist the Sam Maguire this Sunday? We take a look at all the matchups, odds, stats and everything else you need to know below.

Analysis
Armagh earned their spot in this year’s All-Ireland decider courtesy of a hard-fought extra-time victory over Kerry. The Kingdom went into that game heavily fancied to make it to a third consecutive All-Ireland Football Final. The Orchard County had other ideas however and the resilience they showed to pull the game out in extra time after so many heartbreaks from losses on penalties has to be admired.
Prior to that semi-final victory, many people would have questioned the bottle of Kieran McGeeney’s side given that they were unable to close out big games on a number of occasions. With that monkey off their back, you would have to imagine that there is a new sense of belief in the Armagh camp as to what this squad are capable of when the going gets tough.
This Armagh team are not afraid to get bodies behind the ball in defence to frustrate opposition attacks. However, every team gets bodies behind the ball these days. What makes Armagh a good defensive outfit is that they concede very few goals with just 3 goals scored against them in this year’s Championship.
Where this team is really dangerous is on the counterattack. When they turn teams over they are arguably the best in the country at breaking at pace and converting those opportunities into scores.

Analysis
Galway have done it the hard way to get back to a second All-Ireland Final in 3 years. After coming 2nd to Sunday’s opponents Armagh in the All-Ireland group stage they had to go the preliminary quarter-final route. The Tribesmen rose to that challenge, taking care of Monaghan in the preliminary quarter-final and then upsetting the odds against both Dublin in the quarter-final and later Donegal in the semi-final.
The performances against Dublin and Donegal suggest that this is a team ready to claim the sport’s ultimate prize. From a Galway point of view, you would have to worry about this side’s record in deciders at Croke Park under Pádraic Joyce. That record is:
2021 Connacht Final loss to Mayo (yes it was played in Croke Park)
2022 Division 2 League Final loss to Roscommon
2022 All-Ireland Final loss to Kerry
2023 Division 1 League Final loss to Mayo
To give this Galway team credit, they have won plenty of big games in Croke Park such as All-Ireland semi-finals and quarter-finals. Still, their abysmal 0-4 record in deciders at headquarters under Joyce is worth noting.
What makes this current edition of the Galway footballers so good is that they defend incredibly well as a unit. All players are committed to the cause when they are out of possessions. Then when they have the ball they are able to count on top-class forwards such as Damien Comer, Shane Walsh, Matthew Tierney and Cillian McDaid (when he is deployed further up the pitch).
We have to mention Dylan McHugh too of course for the impact he has had from the half-back line for the Tribesmen which sees him in pole position to be crowned Footballer of the Year.
Armagh v Galway Head-To-Head
These two teams are very familiar with each other having faced off in each of the last 3 years.
Recent Meetings
Armagh 1-12 0-15 Galway | 2024 All-Ireland Groups Round 3 | Markievicz Park, Sligo
Galway 1-12 0-16 Armagh | 2023 All-Ireland Groups Round 3 | Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada, Co. Leitrim
Galway 2-21 3-18 Armagh (Galway won 4-1 on penalties) | 2022 All-Ireland Quarter-Final | Croke Park, Co. Dublin
The recent meetings between these two counties suggest there is nothing between the two sides. Galway’s one win from those three fixtures came via penalties after an epic All-Ireland Quarter-Final in 2022.
Armagh were able to fashion a 1-point win last season which saw them top their All-Ireland series group while sending Galway the preliminary quarter-final route.
The most recent fixture between the sides was earlier this summer. That ended in a draw although Armagh would have been the happier with the result as it again ensured they topped the All-Ireland series group while once again consigning Galway to the tougher route.
Armagh v Galway Prediction
Prediction: Armagh 2-13 Galway 1-14
I’m predicting that Armagh will beat Galway by 2 points to win the 2024 All-Ireland Football Final.
As evidenced by recent previous meetings between the two counties, there is very little between these teams. That makes extra-time a very real possibility this Sunday at Croke Park.
Despite this, I think Armagh will do enough to win this game in 70 minutes which will see them crowned as All-Ireland Football Champions for the first time since 2002. When these sides met at HQ in 2022 it was the long ball that caused havoc for the Tribesmen and ultimately what led to Armagh pulling themselves out of a 6-point hole in injury time. In my eyes, defending the long ball is the fatal flaw of this Galway team and the one that will come back to haunt them here.
If we go player for player then Galway surely win the talent battle but Armagh are a side that play better than the sum of their parts. Their attacking moves in particular are an area that can see them overcome Galway in this All-Ireland Final.
