Arkle Chase Preview

When is the Arkle Chase?

The Arkle Chase is scheduled for an off time of 2.10 pm on Tuesday, March 12th. It is the 2nd race on Day 1 of the Cheltenham Festival.

Arkle Chase Distance

The Arkle Chase is run over a distance of 1 mile 7 furlongs and 199 yards.

Arkle Chase Favourite

The favourite for the 2024 Arkle Chase is Gaelic Warrior at odds of 5/2 per the latest Cheltenham odds at BoyleSports. Those odds suggest that Gaelic Warrior has a 28.6% chance of winning this year’s renewal of the Arkle Chase.

The Willie Mullins-trained horse is a worthy favourite heading into this race as he is the highest-rated horse per the Racing Post’s ratings at 157 plus he has had a strong start to life over fences with 2 wins from 3 outings. However, a poor run last time out at Leopardstown before unseating jockey Paul Townend does give some cause for concern.

Arkle Chase Betting

The second favourite in the betting is Il Etait Temps at odds of 6/1. Another Mullins horse, Il Etait Temps holds strong claims with a form line that reads 121 this season. That loss however did come against favourite Gaelic Warrior by 5-and-a-half lengths at Limerick in late December.

Third in the odds is another from the Mullins stable in Hunters Yarn . This gelding is a lightly raced sort over fences with just 2 appearances over fences. The first of those ended in a fall at the last when 5 lengths clear. Next time out he made no mistakes when winning by 10 lengths at Fairyhouse in January.

At similar prices, we have Quilixios (13/2) who will be saddled by Rachael Blackmore, Found A Fifty (15/2) from Gordon Elliott’s stable, Joe Tizzard’s JPR One who is a 9/1 chance, and My Mate Mozzie at 12/1.

At bigger odds in this year’s Arkle Chase are Nigel Twiston-Davies duo Master Chewy (16/1) and Matata (18/1) while Authorised Speed rounds out the betting market at 80/1.

Arkle Chase Tips

Johnny Dineen : I do think it’s a wide-open race… I’d be giving JRP One and possibly Inthepocket (NR) a chance.

Robbie Power : I think Quilixios has an each-way chance, I think it’s a wide-open Arkle. JPR One has an each-way chance in the race. Actually, Gavin’s [Cromwell] horse My Mate Mozzie has an each-way chance in the race, he’ll be ridden to run well and that’s the kind of horse you’re looking for they’re going to go quick in the Arkle. And I think My Mate Mozzie and Quilixios are each-way chances.

Gavin Cromwell: Il Etait Temps and Found A Fifty [the biggest dangers].

David Casey: Quilixios E/W

* The above tips are from panellists at the BoyleSports Cheltenham Preview Night on February 23rd.

Phil Anderson: There are a few doubts about those at the front of the market in the Arkle, perhaps most notably the propensity for a couple of them to jump right, and one that might be worth chancing at an each-way sort of price is Matata .

He didn’t go quick enough when tapped for toe at Lingfield behind JPR One last time but he was coming back again at the line and he could be hard to catch if he’s allowed to get loose on the front end, particularly over this course and distance.

Tip: Matata @ 18/1 E/W

Arkle Chase Betting Trends

The favourite has won the last 3 renewals of the Arkle Chase. El Fabiolo won last year at 11/10, Edwardstone won in 2022 at 5/2 while Shishkin won in 2021 as a 4/9 favourite.

The favourite in the Arkle Chase has won 7 of the last 10.

The last 5 winners of this race finished in the top 3 in all completed race starts in the leadup to their Arkle win.

Only 2 winners in the last 10 years went off at odds of bigger than 5/1, those were Put The Kettle On at 16/1 (2020) and Western Warhorse at 33/1 (2014).

Six and 7-year-olds have dominated this race with 11 of the last 12 winners of the Arkle Chase coming from that age group.

Quilixios was backed into 6/1 from 10/1 in the 48 hours prior to this race before easing back out to 13/2.
