With Ruben Amorim having been axed after just 14 months in charge, we're taking a look at the next permanent Manchester United manager odds to see who is in line to replace him.

Amorim’s position had been under scrutiny throughout his reign due to initial poor results on the pitch, and even after an improvement this term, the Portuguese alluded to frustration behind the scenes.

Comments made before and after a 1-1 draw at Leeds led to the club’s leadership having "reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change".

The chase for a seventh permanent head coach since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement could well feature these early favourites:

Darren Fletcher

Darren Fletcher @ 5/2

The Scot was a trusted on-field lieutenant of Ferguson’s during a fine playing career at Old Trafford that earned him five Premier League titles and a Champions League triumph.

Returned to United after hanging up his boots and had been a popular coach at youth and senior levels prior to being put in temporary charge following Amorim’s departure.

With twin sons Jack and Tyler already part of the first-team squad, Fletcher would represent a seamless transition if early results go his way.

Oliver Glasner

Oliver Glasner @ 3/1

The Austrian may appeal as a former one-club man as a player, making more than 500 appearances with SV Ried.

His CV as a manager makes pretty impressive reading as well, gaining promotion with LASK, qualifying for the Champions League with Wolfsburg, winning the Europa League at Eintracht Frankfurt and lifting the FA Cup with Crystal Palace. Favours a similar formation to Amorim.

Enzo Maresca

Enzo Maresca @ 9/2

The 45-year-old guided Chelsea to Champions League qualification via a fourth-placed finish last season, in addition to winning the UEFA Conference League and Club World Cup.

Previously led Leicester to promotion, but the manner of his departure from Stamford Bridge may give cause for concern, along with links to United’s neighbours, Manchester City.

Gareth Southgate

Gareth Southgate @ 9/1

The former midfielder had spells in charge of Middlesbrough and England Under-21s before embarking on a stellar eight-year stint as Three Lions boss. He led England to two European Championship finals and the World Cup semis.

Hailed for creating a positive culture within the international squad , Southgate could be the ideal candidate to bring cohesion to United’s dressing room .

Michael Carrick

Michael Carrick @ 8/1

Picked up silverware throughout his dozen years as a player with United, including five Premier League titles, Champions League and Europa League successes and a Club World Cup triumph.

Was an assistant to Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford and briefly took charge following his departure. Did the same with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and emerged with credit on both occasions, but his managerial record at Middlesbrough was only moderate.

Xavi

Xavi @ 10/1

Four times a Champions League winner during a long and distinguished playing career in a brilliant Barcelona side, which claimed eight La Liga titles.

Also a World Cup and dual European Championship victor with Spain, and earned a reputation for enforcing strict rules around training after returning to Barca as manager in 2021, topping the domestic table in 2022-23.
