In this post, you can find our AFL Grand Final prediction along with tips, a best bet and everything else you need to know ahead of the big game from down under.
This year’s Grand Final pits the Sydney Swans against the Brisbane Lions. Interestingly, these are the last two beaten finalists in this competition which means that one club will get to make amends for their recent Grand Final loss this Saturday.
Sydney were last crowned AFL Premiership winners in 2012 and have suffered plenty of heartbreak since then having lost 3 Grand Finals in the meantime. Brisbane, on the other hand, haven’t won the title since 2003. Their victory in ‘03 capped a Golden era for the club as it marked their 3rd straight AFL Premiership victory, an achievement that made them the greatest side of the modern era in the eyes of many.

AFL Grand Final Betting Odds: Sydney Swans v Brisbane Lions
Result | Odds | Chance |
---|---|---|
Sydney Swans | 8/11 | 57.9% |
Brisbane Lions | 21/20 | 48.8% |
The Sydney Swans are the narrow favourites for the 2024 AFL Grand Final at odds of 8/11.
The Brisbane Lions are underdogs at odds of 21/20 to be crowned this season’s AFL Premiership winners.
Handicap Betting
Sydney Swans: -3.5 @ 5/6
Brisbane Lions: +3.5 @ 5/6
The oddsmakers think there is very little between these two sides with the handicap set at just 3.5 points in favour of the Sydney Swans. That means that Sydney will have to win by 4 or more points to deliver for handicap backers. Any other result would see Brisbane be the winning side in the handicap betting market.
Sydney Swans v Brisbane Lions Preview
The Irish Angle
Conor McKenna, All-Ireland winner with Tyrone in 2021, is bidding to become only the second-ever player to have won both an All-Ireland Final and AFL Grand Final.
The only other player to achieve that feat was Tadhg Kennelly of Co. Kerry who won the AFL Grand Final with Sydney in 2005 before starting in the All-Ireland Final for Kerry’s 2009 Sam Maguire-winning side.
It’s interesting the similarities that McKenna and Kennelly share. Both players made the move to Australia when they were young, then returned to Ireland to win an All-Ireland with their native county before later resuming their AFL careers. Although Kennelly is retired since 2011 he will no doubt be an interested observer this Saturday as his former team compete for the most coveted prize in the sport.

Paths To The Final
Sydney were the class of the AFL this season and topped the ladder from round 8 all the way until the end of the Minor Premiership season.
They played Greater Western Sydney in the first round of the Finals Series and beat them narrowly by 13.10 (88) to 12.10 (82). That put the Swans through to the Preliminary finals against Port Adelaide. This time around there were no doubts about the outcome as Sydney cruised to a 36-point victory to earn them a spot in this year’s Grand Final.
The Brisbane Lions had a slightly longer route to this Grand Final after their 5th-placed finish in the Ladder during the season. In the first round of the Finals Series, they claimed a comfortable victory against 8th-placed Carlton. That booked them a date with Greater Western Sydney, the team that the Swans beat in the previous round. Like the Swans, the Lions played out a competitive game with Greater Western Sydney but ultimately triumphed by 5 points. In the Preliminary Final they proved too good for 3rd ranked Geelong with a 10-point win which gave them a chance at redeeming last year’s Grand Final loss.
AFL Grand Final Prediction
Sydney Swans 14.8 (92) Brisbane Lions 15.7 (97)
I’m predicting that the Brisbane Lions will beat the Sydney Swans by 5 points to win the 2024 AFL Grand Final and win their first Premiership title since 2003.
There is very little separating these sides as the betting market suggests. Sydney have been one of the favourites for this year’s Premiership for a long time while the Lions have had plenty of ups and downs this season. I think the Lions are peaking at just the right time and will have learned their lessons from last year’s Grand Final defeat.
The Lions to do just enough down the stretch in this game in what I expect will be a nail-biting finish.
