Africa Cup of Nations Favourites – Quarter-Finals Preview
Hosts Still Team To Beat
Hosts still team to beat at AFCON
Hosts Morocco are now 15/8 with BOYLE Sports to be crowned continental champions for the first time since 1976 after making safe progress to the quarter-finals.
They were unbeaten in the group stage before edging past Tanzania 1-0 in the last 16 thanks to Brahim Diaz’s second-half winner.
That was the Real Madrid forward’s fourth goal of the finals, leaving him top of the scoring charts having also been the leading scorer in qualifying.
Morocco meet five-time AFCON champions Cameroon in Rabat on Friday.
The Indomitable Lions , wounded from a failure to qualify for this summer's World Cup and with a new coach in place, also earned seven points from the group stage before seeing off South Africa 2-1 to reach the last eight.
David Pagou’s team have seen their overall title odds lengthen from 16/1 to 20/1 but if they can overcome star-studded Morocco they will fancy their chances of going all the way.
Odds Slashed On This Country
Senegal Odds Slashed
Senegal are the big movers in the betting odds and are now second-favourites behind Morocco at 7/2, having started the tournament at 6/1 .
The Lions of Teranga boast a powerful and experienced squad with an array of attacking riches, including Sadio Mane , Ismaila Sarr and Nicolas Jackson , and have hit the ground running with 10 goals scored and just two conceded.
On paper, they should have few issues seeing off 25/1 title outsiders Mali in Tangier as they chase a third AFCON final in four editions.
Mali , the only country still standing never to have been champions, scrapped their way into the quarter-finals, drawing all three of their group games before upsetting Tunisia on penalties – their four matches only producing a meagre six goals in total.
If Senegal get through, the 2021 champions will meet either Egypt or Ivory Coast in what would be a mouthwatering semi-final.
Egypt Drift
What of AFCON powerhouses Egypt?
Egypt had been 11/2 to claim a record-extending eighth AFCON crown but they have drifted to 8/1 – the same odds as Algeria and Ivory Coast – after flattering to deceive so far.
The Pharaohs required a stoppage-time Mohamed Salah winner to beat Zimbabwe first up and a penalty from the Liverpool forward to see off South Africa in their second Group B match.
A goalless draw with Angola followed and they required extra time to squeeze past underdogs Benin in the last 16 – with Salah again on the scoresheet.
Egypt now meet reigning champions the Ivory Coast , who brushed aside Burkina Faso 3-0 in the previous round thanks to another influential display from Amad Diallo .
The Manchester United winger has opened the scoring in three of his side’s four matches and much could depend on him in Agadir on Saturday.
The other quarter-final sees Algeria meet 2023 runners-up Nigeria in Marrakesh in a clash which pits the most prolific attack against the joint-tightest defence so far.
Nigeria , now 5/1 third-favourites to claim a fourth AFCON title, have netted 12 times while Algeria have conceded only once, the same as Morocco .
Half of Nigeria’s goals have come from star forwards Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman and the Super Eagles will hope their on-field bust-up during Monday's 4-0 win over Mozambique is nothing serious.
