Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

The stage is set for a thrilling climax to an exciting Formula One season , and this year’s gripping title race obviously has to be factored into our Abu Dhabi Grand Prix predictions.

With McLaren ace Lando Norris holding a 12-point lead at the head of the table, he can afford to just target a top-three finish to clinch a first world championship victory, which slightly tempers his appeal at 9/4 here.

Nearest challenger Max Verstappen is 11/8 favourite to complete a hat-trick of race wins this weekend as he chases a fifth consecutive title triumph for Red Bull.

However, we feel the best value in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix odds lies with Norris’ team-mate Oscar Piastri at 10/3.

The Australian should have won in Qatar last weekend but paid a heavy price for McLaren’s indecision during an early safety car.

With a 16-point gap to make up on Norris , Piastri is unlikely to end up as champion, but an eighth race win of the year would be some compensation.

Piastri's Chance

Piastri Up To Speed If Tactics Are Right

Piastri took control of proceedings in Qatar from pole position, but a calamitous McLaren strategy decision when a safety car was deployed on the seventh lap after Nico Hulkenberg and Pierre Gasly collided proved costly.

The Australian, who eventually had to settle for second best, said after the race that he was “speechless” and added: “Clearly, we didn’t get it right tonight. I drove the best race I could, as fast as I could, and there was nothing left.

“In hindsight, it is pretty obvious what we should have done, but we will discuss it as a team. It is not all bad, but tough to swallow at the moment.”

Piastri had earlier enjoyed a smooth success in the Sprint contest at Lusail, though, and clearly has plenty of pace at this point.

McLaren locked up the front row of the grid in Abu Dhabi 12 months ago, when Norris prevailed after Piastri was sent spinning by Verstappen into the opening turn, so we know the set-up of this circuit suits.

Nothing To Lose For Verstappen

Verstappen Ready To ‘Have A Go At It’

Of course, Verstappen can never be ruled out at a track where he has such fond memories, notably pipping Lewis Hamilton to the 2021 title among four straight Yas Marina race wins.

However, the flying Dutchman accepts that it will be an uphill battle this time, with Red Bull struggling to match the speed of McLaren .

“I am excited and happy to go to Abu Dhabi and have a go at it,” said Verstappen .

“On pure pace, we are not on the same level, but when strategy comes into play, or making the calls at the right time, we might have an opportunity.”

George Russell can be backed at 10/1 to give Mercedes a third win of the year, with team-mate Kimi Antonelli quoted at 14/1, while Ferrari duo Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton are 25/1 and 40/1 respectively to finish off a frustrating campaign on a high note.
