World Cup 2026 Betting Favourites
France
The joint favourite for the 2026 World Cup is France at odds of 6/1. Those odds suggest they have a 14.3% chance of going one step further than their runner-up finish in the 2022 World Cup against Argentina.
France have a strong World Cup history having won the competition in 1998 and 2018 while finishing as runner-up in 2006 and the most recent iteration of the event in 2022. While Didier Deschamps has received criticism at times for an overly negative approach during tournaments, they remain a consistent entity on the international stage after being narrowly knocked out of Euro 2024 at the Semi-Final stage 2-1 by eventual winners Spain.
A lot can change in two years regarding the talent a nation has at its disposal with older footballers moving on while new stars begin to emerge. France continues to have a gluttony of talent to choose from and in 2 years' time Warren Zaire Emery will be 20, Camavinga 23 and Mbappé arguably still in his “prime” at 27
Brazil
Brazil are another side priced at 6/1 to win the 2026 World Cup despite underwhelming in their Quarter-Final defeat to Croatia in 2022. Those odds give the Samba Boys a 14.3% chance of winning the competition for the first time since 2022.
Brazil despite poor recent showings at the World Cups, they’re the most successful country in the history of the competition after victories in 1958, 1962 1970, 1994 and 2002 as well as finishing runners-up in 1950 and 1998. Brazil are undergoing somewhat of a famine on the international stage having not won a trophy since their 2019 Copa America success.
In terms of squad selection in the coming years before the 2026 World Cup, it’ll be interesting to see how the squad changes with a lot of their so-called “better” players at the end of their twenties or in their thirties. Neymar in particular will be 34 for the next World Cup and is unlikely to feature. However, they will still be able to enlist the services of Endrick who will be only 19, Vinícius who will be 26 and João Pedro will be 24.
Spain
Euro 2024 Champions Spain are another side priced at 6/1 to win the 2026 World Cup after being knocked out at the Round of 16 stage in 2022. Could this be the latest Spanish side to dominate the international stage>
Spain won their first and only World Cup with the famous side that won the 2010 iteration of the event but aside from that their best showing was a fourth finish back in 1950. However, their recent Euro Championship success was no surprise with them now the most successful country in the competitions history with wins in 1964 2008, 2012 and 2024 and a runner-up finish in 1984.
Unlike previous Spanish sides which tended to overwhelm their opposition with their famous “tika taka” style which was heavily possession-dominant with up to 8/9 midfielders on the pitch. Under De La Fuente they can mix it up more with fast dynamic attackers out wide with Williams 24 and Yamal 19 at the next tournament and midfielder Pedri only 23.
England
England are fourth favourites for the World Cup at odds of 7/1. Those odds suggest that the country has a 12.5% chance of winning their second-ever World Cup following on from their victory in 1966.
Under Southgate, England became a more consistent entity on the international stage including a 4th finish at the 2018 World Cup and a Quarter-Final iteration of the event. However, Southgate was still widely criticised throughout his 8-year tenure for a perceived overly negative approach, and he announced his resignation following Euro 2026 so they will be searching for a new manager ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifying.
England are rarely short of top-quality talent and with Mainoo 21, Bellingham 23 and Palmer 24 for the next competition that is unlikely to change anytime soon. The key to whether they can finally win a tournament in 2026 might come down to their next manager and whether they will be better able to harness the talent at their disposal.
Argentina
Argentina are fifth favourites to retain their 2022 World Cup victory at odds of 9/1. Those odds suggest Argentina have a 10% chance of winning the big one again.
Their 2022 World Cup success put them on three following successes in 1978, 1986 and 2022 while also finishing runners-up in 1930, 1990 and 2014. Another success would put them level with Germany and Italy for titles in the competition. Argentina were most recently victorious in the 2024 Copa America Final after their 1-0 victory over Colombia.
The 2022 World Cup was seen as a swan song moment for Lionel Messi as he finally won the competition that his career arguably deserved the most. However, with Messi going to be 39 by the next tournament, I find it very unlikely that we will see him representing Argentina by then. They will still have plenty of talent though with Lisandro Martinez 28. Garnacho 22 and Fernandez 25 by the next tournament.
