Will A British Trained Horse Win The Supreme Novices Hurdle?
Supreme Novices British Hopefuls Ranked
Hurricane Pat
(4) Hurricane Pat @ 20/1
Gary and Josh Moore’s gelding Hurricane Pat has forced his way into the equation with a couple of Sandown victories, comfortably coping with tough conditions in what looked like a hotly contested affair last time out.
Josh Moore said, “He was a nice horse last year, but he has strengthened up a lot over the summer, and his mind has grown up as well; he’s taking everything in his stride.”
Act of Innocence
(3) Act of Innocence @ 16/1
Having previously landed a Taunton bumper for Paul Nicholls in March, this five-year-old made a very promising debut for Nicky Henderson at Newbury in late November. Dan Skelton’s Sinnatra looked a solid opponent, and the pair pulled well clear of the rest, but he was no match for Act Of Innocence on the run-in.
It was Henderson’s seventh win in that race since 2015, and having used it to unleash the likes of Buveur D’Air and Jonbon in that time, he said: “He’s very nice…he’s a lovely big boy with a great temperament and attitude.”
Old Park Star
(2) Old Park Star @ 12/1
Henderson certainly knows what it takes to land the Supreme, having struck with the likes of Constitution Hill, Shishkin and Altior, but even he was caught by surprise when this five-year-old bolted up at Cheltenham recently. Following up on an earlier Kempton strike, Old Park Star sauntered to the front and simply left his rivals standing when sprinting clear from the home turn for a 12-length success.
Henderson declared: “I’ve got to say I was impressed, I just loved the way he did it - he jumped, he travelled and quickened…I think he just enjoyed himself. “He’s taken me by surprise by the authority of it all. I hadn’t been making any grand plans at this stage, but we might have to, which is a very nice problem.”
Mydaddypaddy
(1) Mydaddypaddy @ 5/1
Skelton’s charge featured in our 10 horses to follow for the National Hunt season on the back of last term’s visually impressive Huntingdon bumper win, and he has not let us down so far. The Walk In The Park gelding has hardly had to break sweat in scoring over obstacles at Carlisle and Haydock and is setting the early pace for the Cheltenham Festival opener.
At Haydock, Mydaddypaddy put in a big leap at the second last before strolling home a seven-length scorer, and Skelton beamed: “We’re really happy with that. “He was very quick and nimble two out, and he was authoritative. With the good novices, you know they’ve got the ability, that is there, it’s the jumping that is important for experience.”
Tougher tests obviously await, but connections clearly hold this imposing individual in high esteem.
