Moyle Alonzo

Moyle Alonzo - 6/4

The favourite for the 2026 Champion Stakes is the Liam Dowling -trained Moyle Alonzo for the Galloping Lads Syndicate, who is no stranger to Powerstown .

Last season, Moyle Alonzo qualified for the 2025 National Meeting following his Derby Trial Stake success in Kerry . In the BoyleSports Irish Coursing Derby, he clocked well in a successful opening three rounds, beating Coshair Howdodo in 12.72 after leading early on the hill, then beating Stickmein from behind again, showing gears on the hill to win in 12.97 and then beating A Bitta Luck late in 13.10 before being knocked out by Cooga Magic in the quarter-final stage.

Moyle Alonzo has been an impressive performer on the All-Age scene this season, winning the Kit Browne North Kerry Cup in Ballyduff, defeating Ballymac Peaky in the final in what was a red-hot stake which included multiple trial stake winners, including Abbey Einstein,  Lift the Tempo, Eulogy and On The Boil.

The Fawn and White July 2023 son of Adios Alonso and Ballymac Enya secured his pathway to the Champion Stakes after winning The Kingdom Cup, setting the fastest time in the opening round before beating kennelmate Ballymac Mulan. T he dog finished fifth in the Champion Stakes qualification table with 13 points and €5,250 won.

He meets Sparkplug Kerry in the first round but remains a major contender for success.

Kerry Watch

Kerry Watch 5/2

The second favourite for this event is Kerry Watch , who is owned and trained by Sean Counihan and Charlie Farrelly from Kerry.

Kerry Watch is another who was an impressive performer during the 2025 BOYLE Sports  Coursing Derby at last season's National Meeting . Despite entering the competition as a rank outsider with odds of 100/1, he made an early mockery of them reaching the sem-final including a notable 12.72 win over Barrack Deschamp, before bowing out to the Brendan Matthews- trained Gone To Strand.

Kerry Watch qualified for the 2026 National Meeting following successes in both the Urbs Intacta Cup in Waterford, overcoming A Bitta Luck in the final. He then earned his second seasonal success at Templetuohy in the Premier Cup, defeating Mungos General in the final.

He comes into this stake on the back of a season where he topped the Champion Stake table with 19 points and €8,200 won. Kerry Watch is set to meet Return To Racing in a first-round buckle for a semi-final place.

Five O Five

Five O Five 7/2

The third favourite for the 2026 Champions Stakes is Five O Five, who is trained by Dan O'Connor for owners Dan J O’Connor and Patrick Fitzgerald.

Five O Five was a prominent performer on the field last season and at one point was 6/1 favourite for the BOYLE Sports Coursing Derby following his Derby Trial Stake victory in Mallow, as well as his victory in the Corn Na Feile Puppy Derby in Abbeyfeale . He performed well early in the 2025 Derby, clocking 13:00 and 12:98 before being eliminated.

The April 2023 son of Watchman and Highland Kathy qualifies due to being a serial scorer on the field, defeating Delgado in the Rakes of Mallow All Age Stake, winning the Gilligan McMahon Memorial Cup at Killimer-Kilrush, defeating Olderbut Nowiser and was runner-up to Kozy Lady in the Corne Na Feile All Age Cup in Abbeyfeale.

After finishing seventh in the qualification table after 12.5 points and €4,565 won, Five O Five first-round course will be against Banoffee Pie.
