In this post, you can find our preview of the 2025 BOYLE Sports Irish Greyhound Derby Final this coming Saturday Night.
Last year’s champion, Bockos Diamond, was unfortunately withdrawn from the competition through injury following the second round. However, that has opened things up for last year’s runner-up Cheap Sandwiches, who is set to go off as the favourite for Saturday’s Final.

The September 2022 Black Dog Proper Heiress is trained by UK Trainer Mark Walis and will be looking to become the first winner of an Irish Greyhound Derby since Toms The Best in 1997.
Since debuting in the Enniscorthy Unraced Stake last year, he’s become a serial scorer on the open-racing scene. A move across to water has prompted the dog to rack up an exceptional CV with successes in the 2024 Coral Olympic, 2025 Cat 1 Winter Derby, the Juvenile Championship at Towcester and the Sussex Cup at Hove.
Thus, it’s no surprise that when his trip across the Irish Sea was announced, there was a great deal of anticipation about his prospects. He duly delivered winning in the opening two rounds in 29.45 and 29.88, beating the likes of Sunshine Sioux, Ballinabola Joe and Ballymac Stud.
It was his third-round victory which caught the eye the most, though holding off the challenge of Cheap Sandwiches. Last week, he ran flat, but lady luck was on his side after he qualified by finishing 4th following the disqualification of Oreo Ollie.
Verdict
The UK hasn’t had such claims going into an Irish Derby Final in some time, and if he can put last week's showing behind him and replicate something closer to his third-round effort, he can’t be ruled out of the current betting.
This is a special greyhound and one with huge claims for outright success.

The first of the two ladies in the final is December 2022 Black Bitch Magical Mag, who is trained by 2017 winning trainer Patrick Guilfoyle, who won the race with Good News.
Relatively new on the racing scene, Mag only debuted at Shelbourne in October 2024, but it took till its third race at Limerick when she got her first win in 28.61. Though a dog with clear potential, he failed to recognise his "true" pace until last July when he won at Shelbourne Park in a swift 28.11 for her 7th career success.
In the opening round, she came 3rd, clocking 30.11 in behind Cosmonaut and Ballymac Axel. However, following that run, she kicked on, going unbeaten in the next three rounds, with victories in 29.42, 29.51 and 29.69.
Last weekend her winning streak ended, but she still earned an all-important qualifying spot, finishing 3 lengths behind winner Glengar Silent and 2 behind runner-up Droopys Deploy, but a time of 29.50 was still her second fastest of the competition so far.
Verdict
Magical Mag has reached this final on merit, and her exceptionally consistent record on track can’t be dismissed ahead of Saturday's Final, especially with her early pace.
However, she will likely need to deliver a career-best clock as well as get some luck if she is to become the first bitch to win this event since Susie Sapphire in 2021.
A dog coming to hand nicely, will need further improvement to figure for outright success.

The Fawn Female and 2022 Whelp is the second bitch in this year’s final, made all the more remarkable by the fact that she already has a litter of pups to follow her on the ground!
Barefoot On Song by Paul Hennnesy will be looking to land his first Irish Greyhound Derby training success after his English Derby win with Priceless Blake at Nottingham in 2019 for owner Bryan Murphy, it’s himself and Kathleen Murphy who own this finalist.
This early-pacer is the ultimate “competition contender,” having reached the final of every event she’s been entered in. Interestingly, while not being the strongest runner, that early pace has allowed her to finish 3rd in each qualifying round aside from round two, which she won in 29.90 ahead of Balinabola Joe.
Verdict
She’s reached this final on merit and is a credit to connections. While I think she’s unlikely to win the final, her early pace could keep her in the frame for a trio place.

The November 2023 dog debuted at Shelbourne Park toward the end of June, coming 3rd and clocking 28.54, and is only 9 races into his career.
Glengar was arguably fortunate to qualify in the opening round, finishing 4th in the opening round, but is another who seems to have grown into the competition. In the second round, he won in 29.48, finishing 6 lengths ahead of Lennies Madge. He then finished runner-up in the preceding two rounds, coming 2 lengths behind Magical Mag, who won in 29.51, and then 1 length back of Proper Heiress in 29.85.
It was his performance in last week's semi-final which really caught the eye when he posted his quickest sectional of the competition away with a 3.40 and went on to win in a swift 29.26, coming 2 lengths ahead of Droopys Deploy.
Verdict
Showed tremendous gears to win last weekend and may need to go even quicker to feature here. But as the youngest dog in the field, he certainly has the capability to land a classic both on Saturday Night and further into the future.

The September 2022 whelp has been here before, having finished as the runner-up in the 2024 BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby, coming only 1 length behind his kennel mate Bockos Diamond, and his 29.33 he clocked in that final would’ve won him 17 of the last 20 finals.
Plenty was expected of him ahead of the competition, and he opened the first round with a 29.53 victory, coming 2 lengths ahead of Daraghs Sydney. He followed that up by going slightly faster and staying unbeaten in this year’s competition, winning the following week in 29.49, coming 5 lengths ahead of Brunch Pal.
For followers of the current outright market, his buckle with Proper Heiress caught the eye in the third round, where he was handed his first defeat of this year’s competition, coming 1 length back of the UK hope, but there was very little to split the dogs even in the sectionals, with both dogs posting a 17.04 and 17.07 respectively.
Following that defeat, he’s reached another level in recent weeks, winning his quarter-final in 29.27 coming 7 lengths ahead of Droopys Deploy and booked his place in the final in even quicker fashion last week, blowing away the field in 29.14, finishing 12.5 lengths ahead of Oreo Ollie after trouble in-behind.
Verdict
Looks to be a Derby Winner in waiting, and after finishing as the bridesmaid last year, few would begrudge connections the success this time around. If he does the business like he can, he will likely win with a few lengths to spare.

The April 2023 dog debuted at Shelbourne Park in September 2024, where he ended up winning an ON1 525 Final in 28.49.
While clearly a dog of ability, it took his career a while to \\ge going, not winning again until the following February in Newcastle after qualifying in the first round, he went on to win the Northern Puppy Final, winning the second round in 28.10 and final then in 28.56. He then reached the Conn and Anne Kirby Final in Limerick, finishing last, and the St Leger semi-final again in Limerick, finishing 4h.
In the opening round, he was fortunate to qualify in 4th, clocking 29.89, but his strong running style has continued to put him in the frame since coming second in 29.78, winning in 29.91, second in 29.76 and second again last week in 29.40.
Verdict
Droopys Deploy is a seriously fast hound and few (if any) will be finishing quicker on Saturday Night, the issue is his tardiness from boxes, which he will have to improve on if he’s to feature for a trio place.
