The prize pot is typically broken down so that the winner gets the majority of the prize pot, 2nd place gets a little under half of what the winner receives, 3rd place gets a little less than the 2nd place, and 4th place gets a small cut of the prize pot too.
For example, if there is a sweepstake of 20 people with €5 entry, the total prize pot would be €100. The person who has the winning horse might receive €60. 2nd place could receive €20 and then €15 for 3rd place and €5 for 4th.
