Stayers’ Hurdle Betting Favourites

Teahupoo

Odds

Teahupoo is the joint-favourite for the 2024 Stayers’ Hurdle at odds of 4/1 according to the latest horse racing odds at BoyleSports. Those odds imply that Teahupoo has a 20% chance of winning the race this March.

Pedigree

Sire: Masked Marvel (GB)

Dam: Droit D’Aimer (FR)

Form

The 6-year-old Gordon Elliott-trained son of Masked Marvel and Droit D’Aimer currently has a career record of 8 wins, 1 runner-up finish and 1 3rd place finish from 13 outings on track.

Teahupoo’s last outing came at Fairyhouse in December. That was his season debut after a 220-day break. Impaire Et Passe was another notable runner in the race but Teahupoo proved too good as he finished 1L ahead of his rival who came 2nd over the 2m4½f trip.

Prior to that run we saw this Gordon Elliott star finish last season at Punchestown back in April in Punchestown’s Champions Stayers Hurdle. The gelding disappointed on that occasion as he finished 4th from a field of 9 horses, 3L back from winner Klassical Dream over the 2m7½f.

The horse's last success came at Gowran Park in January 2023. In the Grade 2 race, Teahupoo was dominant over the 3m½f trip as he stormed home to a 15L win to top the 6-horse field.

Cheltenham Form

This is a horse that is no stranger to the Cheltenham Festival having appeared at the prestigious event in both 2022 and 2023.

In 2022, Teahupoo was disappointing as he couldn’t keep up with the pace in the Champion Hurdle. He finished 9th, 33L back of winner Honeysuckle, after going off at an SP of 9/1.

The appearance at last year’s Cheltenham Festival was more promising however, although it would also end without success. Teahupoo gave a good account of himself in the 2023 Stayers’ Hurdle but wasn’t able to reward backers after going off as the 9/4 SP favourite. Sire Du Berlais had just enough to hold him off with ¾L separating the pair at the finishing line.

Verdict

Third in this race last year, Teahupoo is expected to go close again this time out and the form is promising after winning in his season debut.

Theleme

Odds

The other joint-favourite for Stayers’ Hurdle glory is Theleme who is also 4/1 in the betting per the latest horse racing odds at BoyleSports. Those odds suggest that Theleme has a 20% chance of winning the 2024 Stayers’ Hurdle.

Pedigree

Sire: Sidestep (AUS)

Dam: Utopia Jem (FR)

Form

This Arnaud Chaille-Chaille-trained horse is the son of Sidestep and Utopia Jem. This horse carries major hopes as he bids to be the first French winner of the Stayers’ Hurdle since the legendary Baracouda won the 2003 renewal.

Theleme has an excellent career to date with a record of 11 wins, 6 2nds, and 1 3rd-place finish from 19 outings. Over hurdles he has 10 wins, 5 2nds, and 1 3rd-place finish.

The horse most recently had an impressive showing at Auteuil in November when he topped a 7-horse strong field to finish 10L clear of closest challenger Anjou over the 3m distance.

This was Theleme’s 3rd victory on the spin with his last defeat coming back in April 2023 when he was beaten by 3L by Goa Lil at Auteuil.

Cheltenham Form

Theleme is yet to run at Cheltenham in his career.

Verdict

The horse has huge early credentials for this race and given his quality you can see why he’s 4/1. However, the fact that he is yet to have run outside of France does raise some cause for concern.

Irish Point

Odds

The 3rd favourite for this year’s Stayers’ Hurdle is Irish Point at 5/1. Those odds imply that Irish Point has a 16.7% chance of winning the 2024 renewal of this race.

Pedigree

Sire: Joshua Tree (IRE)

Dam: Burkina (FR)

Form

This 6-year-old gelding is a member of the Gordon Elliot stable and the son of Joshua Tree and Burkina.

His career record over hurdles is an ultra-consistent 5 wins, 2 runner-up finishes.

Irish Point’s most recent showing was at Leopardstown in December when he won at a canter, 11L clear of the field over the 2m7½f trip after going off as Evens favourite.

Prior to that we saw this gelding at Down Royal in November. That was another successful outing as he won on his season debut with 1¾L separating him and 2nd placed Magical Zoe after the 2m1f trip. That was Irish Point’s first outing in 209 days after winning at Aintree back in April.

Cheltenham Form

Irish Point is yet to run at Cheltenham.

Verdict

Two wins from 2 outings this season has seen Irish Point’s odds slashed into 5/1. One to track closely as we get closer to the festival.

Impaire Et Passe

Odds

Next up in the betting is Impaire Et Passe who is an 8/1 chance. Those odds suggest that Impaire Et Passe has an 11.1% chance of winning the 2024 Stayers’ Hurdle.

Pedigree

Sire: Diamond Boy (FR)

Dam: Brune Ecossaise (FR)

Form

The W P Mullins-trained horse is the son of Diamond Boy and Brune Ecossaise.

The 5-year-old has an impressive record over hurdles with 4 wins and 2 runner-up finishes from 6 runs.

The horse's most recent outing on track was at Leopardstown in December when he came 2nd in a 4-horse field, 3¼L back of State Man after the 2m trip.

Impaire Et Passe’s season debut came at Fairyhouse at the beginning of December when he finished 2nd in the Grade 1 Hatton’s Grace Hurdle, 1L behind Stayers’ Hurdle rival Teahupoo.

This gelding’s last win came at Punchestown in April 2023 when he beat 4 other horses, finishing 7½L ahead of High Definition in the Grade 1 race over a 2m3½f trip.

Coming into this season, Impaire Et Passe had a perfect record of 5 wins from 5 outings with a cumulative total winning distance of 44.5 lengths. He is one of the quickest horses in training.

Cheltenham Form

Impaire Et Passe made his debut at the Cheltenham Festival in 2023 when he ran in the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle. The W P Mullins trained-horse won the race with ease in the end, finishing 6½L ahead of the field.

Verdict

A lightly raced horse with serious class and credentials at 8/1 currently. That could prove a shrewd price come March.
