France will be coming into this tournament hungry for success on the back of their disappointing Rugby World Cup Quarter-Final elimination where they lost 28-29 vs South Africa despite their status as tournament hosts.
In the 2023 Six Nations, France finished in second place behind Ireland following a record of four wins from five matches in the competition.
Had it not been for their 32-19 defeat against the Irish in Dublin they would’ve won their second successive Grand Slam Title.
The French will be even hungrier for success this time around to put a disappointing World Cup finish behind them.
As this is an even year (2024) France will have a home advantage against Ireland and England. That could be the edge that gives them another success in the Northern Hemisphere's premier international rugby championship.
Prediction: Champions @ 5/4
Ireland entered the 2023 Rugby World Cup with inarguably their biggest hope for success ever after the best 18-month spell in the history of Irish Rugby. However, it was yet another Quarter-Final heartbreak for the Irish as they were beaten 24-28 by New Zealand in a classic game.
Andy Farrell's side were impressive in the 2023 Six Nations. They won five from five matches to win the 2023 Six Nations alongside the country's fourth-ever Grand Slam. It would be foolish to count them out of winning this tournament again.
However, Ireland will have to do it without Johnny Sexton who retired from the sport at 38 following their Quarter-Final elimination at the World Cup.
Prediction: 2nd Place
England entered the 2023 Rugby World Cup in extremely poor form. That included a defeat to Fiji before the tournament. They put that behind them to top their pool with four wins from four and avenge that Fiji loss in the Quarter-Final.
Steve Borthwick's side, despite losing, gave a great account of themselves against a heavily fancied Springboks outfit who of course went on to beat the All Blacks and become World Champions. That performance suggests that England could be closer to being back to their best than most would have previously thought.
The English will be looking to improve on their poor showing at the 2023 Six Nations where they finished in fourth place. Their sole victories came against the bottom two sides, Wales and Italy.
Plenty will write off this England Team, but I can see signs of some major progress and they could be dangerous in this tournament especially if they can build up some confidence in their early fixtures against Italy and Wales.
Prediction: 3rd Place
Scotland had a disappointing Rugby World Cup where they were eliminated at the Pool Stage following convincing defeats against both South Africa and Ireland.
Scotland’s head coach Gregor Townsend came into last year's tournament under mounting pressure from the nation’s media, however, he guided them to three wins from five matches and a very respectable third-place finish.
The Scots on their day can challenge anyone. It’s a shame that they’ve yet to find consistency on the international stage and with their underage sides underperforming the future doesn’t look bright.
Prediction: 4th Place
At the 2023 Rugby World Cup, they won all four pool games against Fiji, Portugal, Australia and Georgia to top Pool C ahead of second-placed Fiji (who they beat narrowly 32-26 in their opening game).
Wales were knocked out of the tournament 17-29 at the Quarter-Final stage against an Argentina team that would go on to be hammered by the All Blacks.
During the 2023 Six Nations Wales had an extremely poor tournament. They lost four of their five matches to come second from bottom, only avoiding the Wooden Spoon through their 17-29 victory in Round 4 against Italy.
Warren Gatland came in for his second spell as Wales Head Coach in December 2022 (his first coming from 2007-2019) and it was recently announced that he will stay on in the role until the 2027 World Cup.
Time will tell if he can bring them back to their glory days but as of right now, there is a lot of work to be done.
Prediction: 5th Place
Italy joined the competition in 2000 to form the Six Nations from what was previously the Five Nations. Since their inclusion, Italy's performances have been suspect. They have never finished above fourth (achieved in 2013) and they’re usually found winless and bottom of the pile.
Italy were drawn in a tough pool at the Rugby World Cup with France and New Zealand. Despite going into their final Pool Game against France with an outside chance of qualifying for their first-ever World Cup Quarter-Final, they were hammered 60-7 to eliminate them from the tournament. In Pool A they finished third with two wins and two defeats.
The Italians finished bottom of the 2023 Six Nations with five defeats from five matches although they remarkably came closest to beating France, only losing 24-29 in Round 1.
Interestingly, they finished with a points difference of -60 (three better than Wales) and substantially better than their -121-point total from the 2022 edition of this event.
Success for the Italians would be to avoid the Wooden Spoon, perhaps their best chance is by defeating England at home in the opening round (the only team they haven’t in this event) for the first time.
Prediction: 6th Place - Wooden Spoon
