Trained by M-P Mullins the Superstar Galopin Des Champs was the 2023 Gold Cup winner as he stormed to victory to win a dramatic Cheltenham Gold Cup from Bravemansgame. It came down to a tit-for-tat battle with Galopin Des Champs eventually coming out on top up the hill to win by seven lengths. Following the race jockey Paul Townend told ITV Racing

“It wasn’t plain sailing that is for sure. Everywhere I went I was running into trouble. But this is a proper, proper horse because he ran three different races and still won a Gold Cup. I was delighted to see it all going on in front of me. It gave me a chance to fill him up after making up a lot of ground. This race is just different. It brings winning to a different level.”

The horse was most recently run at Leopardstown on the 3rd of February where he continued to show he is in a class beating runner-up Fastorslow by 4.5 lengths.

Cheltenham Form

Galopin Des Champs has raced at Cheltenham on three occasions, the first coming in a Handicap Hurdle back in 2021 where the horse beat 21 other horses in the field including closest challenger Langer Da by 2.25 lengths.

The horse’s second outing at Cheltenham was less favourable in March 2022 falling in the Turners Novices Chase 2 out, 12 lengths ahead when falling at the last

However, the horse returned to its brilliant best last year winning the 2023 Gold Cup beating 12 other horses to the crown including runner-up Bravemansgame by 7 lengths.

Verdict

Galopin Des Champs seems to be in a league of his own and so is a very worthy favourite to retain the Gold Cup.

Fastorslow

Odds

The 2nd  favourite to win the 2024 Cheltenham Gold Cup is Fastorslow at 4/1 per the latest Cheltenham odds at BoyleSports. Those odds suggest that Fastorslow has a 20% chance of winning this race.

Form

The eight-year-old Fastorslow is another with an impressive career record with 4 victories and 5 runner-up finishes. The horse has been trained by Martin Brassil since switching from the A Chaille-Chaille stable early in the horse’s racing career.

The horse most recently ran at Leopardstown on the 3rd of February finishing runner-to Galopin Des Champs losing out by 4.5 lengths.

Cheltenham Form

The horse has run at Cheltenham on two occasions, the first coming in the Coral Handicap Cup at the festival in 2022 where the horse was second and narrowly beaten by a short head by Commander Of Fleet.

The horse was again narrowly beaten at Cheltenham Festival 2023 when the horse came runner-up in the Ultima Handicap Chase to Corach Rambler by a narrow neck meaning connections of the horse again had a narrow defeat at the festival.

Verdict

Fastorslow has come close to victory at the event on two occasions but will need to be at his very best here to challenge Galopin Des Champs.

Shishkin

Odds

Next up in the betting is Shishkin who is a 7/1 chance to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup at the 2024 Cheltenham Festival. Those odds suggest that Shishkin has a 12.5% chance of 2024 Gold Cup glory.

The ten-year-old is trained by Nicky Henderson and is another horse who boasts a serious record on the track with fourteen victories, one runner-up finish and one third finish from nineteen races.

The horse most recently ran at Newbury early this month where the horse beat four other horse including runner-up Hitman by four and a half lengths over the two mile seven and a half furlong distance.

Cheltenham Form

The horse has run at Cheltenham on several occasions, the first came back during the 2020 festival in the Supreme Novices Hurdle where the horse was victorious beating Abacadabras by a head.

At the Festival in 2021, the horse was again victorious winning the Arkle Challenge Trophy Novices Chase coming twelve lengths clear of Eldorado Allen. The 2022 festival was not as successful though with the horse pulled up in the Champion Chase with the ground not suiting.

Most recently the horse ran again at Cheltenham in the Ryanair Chase where the horse came runner-up two and three quarter lengths back of winner Envoi Allen.

Verdict

Shishkin is an experienced Cheltenham Campaigner but recent form suggests that it could be past its best making success difficult here.

Gerri Colombe

Odds

The fourth favourite for the 2024 Cheltenham Gold Cup is Gerri Colombe at 8/1. Those odds imply that Gerri Colombe has a 11.1% chance of being crowned the next Gold Cup winner.

The eight-year-old is trained by Gordon Elliot and he boosts a serious record on the track with nine victories and two runner-up finishes from eleven outings, showing the horse’s consistency.

The horse was most recently runner-up against race favourite for this event Galopin Des Champs coming a staggering 23 lengths back at Leopardstown on the 28th of December.

Cheltenham Form

The horse has run at Cheltenham once coming last March in the Brown Advisory Novices Chase being beaten by a short head by The Real Whacker.

Verdict

The horse’s record speaks for itself, but its most recent outing shows it has a lot of ground to make up on Galopin Des Champs if it is to stand any chance of success.

The nine-year-old trained by Venetia Williams had not been seen on the track since the 26th of December 2022 when the horse unseated the rider. This capped off a disappointing year for the horse. However, he was ruled out in January after veterinary checks following his King George run revealed a few issues.

Following that announcement, Trainer Venetia Williams said: “L’Homme Presse is fine but we’re not going to bring him back into training this season and will focus on next season with him”.

L’Homme Presse most recently ran at Ascot earlier this month over the two mile five furlong distance where the horse finished runner-up coming five and a half lengths back of winner Pic D’Orhy.

Cheltenham Form

The horse has run at Cheltenham on two occasions, first on the new course in January 2022 winning a Novices Chase coming ten lengths clear of The Glancing Queen.

The second time the horse ran was at the Cheltenham Festival the following March on the old course winning the Brown Advisory Novices Chase coming three and a half lengths ahead of Ahoy Senor.

Verdict

The recent return to the track was promising and L’Homme Press might be well placed to challenge come Cheltenham.
