The Champion Hurdle is a Grade 1 National Hunt hurdle race in Great Britain open to horses four years or older.

The race is run on the Old Course at Cheltenham over a distance of about 2 miles and ½ furlong (2 miles and 87 yards, or 3,298 metres), with eight hurdles to jump.

It is the last leg of the Triple Crown of Hurdling and will take place on the opening day of the Cheltenham Festival in March.

Verdict

State Man was the bridesmaid to Constitution Hill last year but with the latter now gone this horse is a very worthy favourite for the Champion Hurdle

The horse last ran at Leopardstown last December over the 7.5 furlong distance beating five other horses including runner-up Asterion Forlonge by nine and a half lengths.

Verdict

The horses recent run suggests the horse still has class, but this race should be a step too far.

The horse’s most recent outing on track was at Newbury last month, where the horse beat twenty other horses including runner-up L'Eau Du Sud by 2 and a 1/4 lengths, which was the horse's first victory since winning on the Cheltenham course last November but disappointed the following month in Ascot.

The horse has run at Cheltenham course on two occasions, the first coming in November 2022 where the horse finished 6th from the field of eight and 30 lengths back of Fennor Cross.

The horse's latest outing was far more fruitful winning the fifteen horse field coming 2 and a 1/2 lengths ahead of Lookaway on the Cheltenham Old Course.

Verdict

The most recent run suggests positive signs, but this race should be a step beyond without some luck.

Zarak The Brave
