The Champion Hurdle is a Grade 1 National Hunt hurdle race in Great Britain open to horses four years or older.

The race is run on the Old Course at Cheltenham over a distance of about 2 miles and ½ furlong (2 miles and 87 yards, or 3,298 metres), with eight hurdles to jump.

It is the last leg of the Triple Crown of Hurdling and will take place on the opening day of the Cheltenham Festival in March.

The horse has run at Cheltenham on two occasions, the first coming in a Handicap Hurdle at the festival in 2022 where the horse beat runner-up First Street by one and a quarter lengths.

At Cheltenham Festival 2023, the horse was runner-up in the Champion Hurdle finishing nine lengths back of winner Constitution Hill.

Verdict

State Man was the bridesmaid to Constitution Hill last year but with the latter now gone this horse is a very worthy favourite for the Champion Hurdle

The second favourite to win the 2024 Champion Hurdle is Irish Point at odds of 4/1. Those odds suggest that State Man has a 20% chance of winning this race.

Irish Points looks to have major place claims in this race.

Not So Sleepy

The joint third favourite to win the 2024 Champion Hurdle is Not So Sleepy at odds of 16/1. Those odds suggest the horse has a 5.9% chance of winning this race.

The horse has run at Cheltenham course on four occasions, the first coming in the Champion Hurdle in 2020 when the horse was pulled up. The horse returned to the same race in 2021 finishing fifth and nine lengths back of Honeysuckle

The horse again ran in the 2023 Champion Hurdle this time coming fifth and 32 lengths back of Constitution Hill

The horses recent run suggests the horse still has class, but this race should be a step too far.

The joint third favourite to win the 2024 Champion Hurdle is Constitution Hill at odds of 16/1. Those odds suggest that the horse has an 5.9% chance of winning this race.

The six-year-old  trained by Nicky Henderson has a career record of four victories and one runner-up finish from eight races.

The horse’s most recent outing on track was at Newbury last month, where the horse beat twenty other horses including runner-up L'Eau Du Sud by 2 and a 1/4 lengths, which was the horse's first victory since winning on the Cheltenham course last November but disappointed the following month in Ascot.

The horse has run at Cheltenham course on two occasions, the first coming in November 2022 where the horse finished 6th from the field of eight and 30 lengths back of Fennor Cross.

The horse's latest outing was far more fruitful winning the fifteen horse field coming 2 and a 1/2 lengths ahead of Lookaway on the Cheltenham Old Course.

Verdict

The most recent run suggests positive signs, but this race should be a step beyond without some luck.

Zarak The Brave

The third favourite to win the 2024 Champion Hurdle is Zarak The Brave at odds of 204/1. Those odds suggest that the horse has a 4.8% chance of winning this race.

The horse has never run at Cheltenham.

Verdict

An impressive sort but unexposed on this course and stage and is probably best watched.
