In this post, we take a look at the 2024 Cheltenham Champion Chase odds and give you a rundown of the chances of each of the betting favourites.
The Queen Mother Cheltenham Champion Chase is a Grade 1 National Hunt steeplechase in Great Britain which is open to horses aged five years or older.
The race is run on the Old Course at Cheltenham over a distance of about 2 miles (1 mile 7 furlongs and 199 yards, or 3,199 metres) during which there are thirteen fences to be jumped.
It is the leading minimum-distance chase in the National Hunt calendar, and it is the feature race on the second day of the Cheltenham Festival.
The W-P Mullins-trained 6-year-old is the son of Spanish Moon and Sainte Mante.
His career record to date is 6 victories, 1 runner-up place and 1 third-place finish from 9 runs.
The gelding’s most recent outing on track was at Punchestown back in April where he won in a four-horse field over a two-mile trip in a Novice Chase. That was the horse's fifth race success on the spin, a streak which started in Punchestown back in April 2022.
El Fabiolo looks unbeatable right now so it’s no surprise that he is the early favourite for the 2024 Cheltenham Champion Chase.
You may want to get on at Evens before the odds shorten further!
The seven-year-old gelding is the son of Walk in The Park and Star Face.
Jonbon’s career record to date is a sensational 10 victories and 2 runner-up finishes from 12 races.
The Nicky Henderson-trained horse’s most recent outing on track was at Sandown back in April. On that occasion he won the Grade 1 Celebration Chase, beating four other horses including closest challenger Captain Guinness by 3.75 lengths.
Interestingly, this gelding’s last defeat in that run of form was on the 14th of March at Cheltenham when it was beaten by fellow favourite for this race, El Fabiola, by 5.5 lengths.
Jonbon’s team will want to avenge that defeat at Cheltenham 2023 and 5/2 could still end up being a shrewd price as he bids to top El Fabiolo and the rest of the field.
The nine-year-old is trained by Alan King and is the son of Kayf Tara and Nothingtoloose.
Edwardstone has a career record of 9 victories, 6 runner-up finishes and 2 third places from his 24 excursions on track.
This gelding’s most recent run came at Cheltenham back in March of 2023. It was a disappointing showing in a field of seven horses as he finished a giant sixty-four lengths back from winner Energumene. The horse’s last success came at Sandown in December 2022 when he beat five other horses, finishing nine lengths clear of runner-up Greaneteen.
Edwardstone is a classy horse if he can find form and if he does between now and March he will be a lot shorter than 20/1 for this race.
The eight-year-old, trained by W.P. Mullins is the son of Westerner and Mirazur.
Ferny Hollow is another consistent scorer on track having passed the finish line as winner 5 times and came runner-up on 2 occasions from his 7 races.
This lightly raced horse’s ability has never been questioned but he has suffered greatly through injury. He was ruled out of the most recent race season back in December 2022 following a tendon injury. The horse last ran in Leopardstown back in December 2021, winning his fifth race on the spin in a Novice Chase.
Ability is not questionable, although Ferny Hollow’s fitness and injury record make him a 25/1 shot with plenty of upside.
This horse is another trained by W.P. Mullins. The eight-year-old gelding is the son of Blue Bresil and Lorette. His career record to date is 8 victories, 2 runner-up placings and 4 third-place finishes from 18 races.
Blue Lord most recently ran at Punchestown in the Champion Chase back in April but finished a disappointing 3rd from five horses, four lengths back of winner Energumene. That was the horse's third race without winning.
This gelding was last victorious in December 2022 where he topped a seven-horse field to come eleven lengths clear of fellow 2024 Champion Chase hopeful Captain Guinness.
If Blue Lord gets it right he could prove a value bet at 33/1.
