Women’s World Cup Top Goalscorer Analysis
This is a very competitive market. I’d urge punters to be wary of rest and rotation throughout the earlier stages of the tournament and the fact that some of the opponents in the earlier stages of the competition could be considerably weaker. You could see players racking up big tallies in one-off matches, e.g. Alex Morgan scored 5/6 of her goals in USA’s first Group game in 2019 where she scored five goals in their 13-0 win against Thailand.NB: At BoyleSports you are not betting on the Women's World Cup Golden Boot winner, just the player that scores the most goals during the tournament. So who are the contenders to be the 2023 Women's World Cup top goalscorer? Women's World Cup Top Goalscorer Betting Favourites
Alex Morgan (USA)– 9/2
The USA Captain unfortunately narrowly missed out on Golden Boot at the 2019 World Cup tying on six goals with her teammate Megan Rapinoe and England’s Ellen White, losing out to her teammate on the minutes played rule.Morgan (34) now heads into this tournament as the favourite to be the top goalscorer and add to her sensational record for the USA of 121 goals in 207 games for her country - including nine at World Cups. The American needs eight to tie Marta on the All-Time World Cup Scorers List and just six to go second on the list. The USA face Vietnam in the country’s opener so a repeat of Thailand could very much be on the cards if the USA go full-strength. Although the rotation risk makes me think 9/2 is too short.Verdict? AvoidSophia Smith (USA) – 7/1
Alex Morgan’s teammate Sophia Smith is currently priced at 7/1 to be the top goalscorer at this year's Women's World Cup. The talented 22-year-old has 12 goals in 30 games for the USA and enters this tournament following her season as the top goalscorer in the 2023 National Women's Soccer League for club side Portland Thorns.Like Morgan, Smith will benefit from playing Vietnam in their first game along with being in a side that is expected to go very far or even win the tournament. Furthermore, as she is 12 years younger than Morgan she is arguably less of a rotation/rest risk throughout the tournament. This could be a breakout tournament as the USA look for their next superstar, but I still don’t think 7/1 is attractive.Verdict? AvoidEsther Gonzalez (ESP)- 9/1
Gonzalez has a solid case, despite being in a Spanish squad in an internal dispute. However, Gonzalez has been credited as the player that helped Spain get back on track following their quarter-final exit to England at UEFA Women’s Euro 2022, scoring three goals in 2023.This season Gonzalez scored 16 goals in 27 matches with Real Madrid Femenino and has scored 26 goals in 36 matches with Spain heading into the World Cup. Expect her to be one of her country's main attacking threats, but I’m unsure how far a Spanish squad will go while being in dispute.Verdict? Avoid.Rachel Daly (ENG) – 10/1
The versatile defender/striker has primarily played as LB for England but has emerged as the main contender to rival Alessia Russo to lead the line for the Lionesses this season with Beth Mead injured and Ellen White retired.Daly had a stunning domestic campaign for Aston Villa with a prolific 30 goals in 30 games in all competitions. She also scored twice for England in the Arnold Clark Cup success earlier this year. The problem is that Daly is not a concrete starter, as a striker anyway so despite the chance of a bucket of goals against Haiti in the opener it isn’t sure enough for me.Verdict? AvoidOthers Contenders
Elsewhere Spanish All-Time top-scorer Jennifer Hermoso can be gotten at 12/1 while Australian Superstar Sam Kerr who went close at the last World Cup is 12/1. Alessia Russo of England is 14/1 but it all depends on whether she starts most games over Daly. Amber Barrett's heroics again for Ireland can be gotten at 150/1Top Goalscorer Prediction
Ada Hegerberg 14/1
Hegerberg sat out the last World Cup in protest over Norway’s alleged lack of support for the women’s national team, but this could be a big World Cup for the Norwegian striker who already has 43 goals in 76 games for her country.Norway were drawn in a winnable Group A with New Zealand, Philippines and Switzerland. They would be drawn against Spain, Costa Rica, Zambia or Japan in the Round of 16 which Norway would fancy their chances against all/most.Hegerberg is a genuine superstar being the first recipient of the Ballon d’Or Féminin in 2018, and she has scored 158 goals in 139 matches with Lyon. The Norwegian striker holds the record for most goals in a UEFA Women’s Champions League season (15) and is the all-time highest goalscorer in UEFA Women’s Champions League (59).Click Below For All Our 2o23 Women's World Cup Top Goalscorer Odds*Prices subject to fluctuation
