Rugby World Cup Top Tryscorer Favourites

Damian Penaud (France) – 11/4

The newly signed Clermont winger/centre is one of the most prolific finishers in world rugby.

He finished the 2022 Six Nations as the top try-scorer (3) alongside fellow French winger Gabin Villiere and Ireland wing James Lowe. In the 2023 Six Nations Penaud went one better by winning the prize outright with five tries.

Coming into the 2023 Rugby World Cup Penaud had become a crucial member of the France backline under Fabien Galthié.

Penaud's world class finishing ability and eye for a gap means he has just climbed to third in France's all-time top try-scorers with 33 tries in 46 games. What's more, his ratio of 0.72 tries-per-game is the best ratio of any of the top-ten.

Penaud opened his Rugby World Cup campaign with a try against New Zealand in their opening night victory. He was rested for their game against Uruguay before coming back with a bang scoring three tries against Namibia.

France play Italy next which means Penaud will have another opportunity to rack up a couple tries and take the lead in the Top Tryscorer honours.

Henry Arundell - 9/2

The new kid on the block for England, Arundell started off his career at London Irish playing two-seasons before recently agreeing to sign for Racing 92 for the new season at just twenty years of age.

In 2022, Arundell was highlighted as "one to watch" for the Under 20s Six Nations Championship. He duly obliged, finishing the tournament as joint top-scorer with four.

Arundell was then named as an apprentice player for England's 2022 tour of Australia. Remarkably he scored a try, from his first touch, on his debut. He has since announced himself as a surprise contender for this award scoring a joint England record 5 tries on his World Cup debut against Chile.

England play Samoa next which should provide the young half-back with a great opportunity to add to his tally for this tournament.

Darcy Graham - 6/1

Scotland’s Darcy Graham has put his name squarely in contention for top tryscorer honours with 5 tries to his name from the opening three games.

The winger/full-back will need to get his name amongst the tries in Scotland’s next game against Ireland to stay in contention.

If Scotland can’t beat Ireland with a bonus point and without conceding a bonus point to Ireland it would end Graham’s World Cup and likely his chance at securing Top Tryscorer honours.

Will Jordan (New Zealand) – 9/1

Howlett, Savea, Lomu and many, many more are the greatest New Zealand try-scorers ever, but Speedster Will Jordan (25) is quickly putting himself in similar conversations amongst the rugby faithful since making his debut for the Kiwis in 2020.

In the lead-up to the tournament, Jordan was one of the standout performers for the All Blacks in their 35-20 victory over the Springboks in the second round of the Rugby Championship. In that outing Jordan continued his try-per-game strike rate of 22 tries in his 22 appearances at the international level.

Jordan didn’t get off the mark in the opening game against France and did not feature in the All Blacks second game of the tournament as they named a heavily rotated side against Namibia.

The Crusaders wing finally got his name on the scoreboard in New Zealand’s third Pool A game against Italy. The talented winger scored inside the first ten minutes to get New Zealand up and running and later scored in the 70th minute to put himself right back in the conversation to be the tournament’s top tryscorer.

Jordan has also been selected to start against Uruguay which should be yet another great opportunity to add to his tally of tries.

Damian McKenzie - 12/1

Next up in the betting for the Rugby World Cup Top Tryscorer is Damian McKenzie at odds of 12/1. McKenzie has three tries to his name from two appearances in New Zealand’s opening three Pool A games.

The full-back crossed the line twice against Namibia and once more against Italy. The Chiefs back will lineout for the All Blacks against Uruguay at full-back which should be another great opportunity to add to his tally of tries for this tournament.

The concern you might have with backing McKenzie is that he didn’t make the 23 for New Zealand’s opening game with France. That means there is a concern that he might be dropped again come the knockout rounds of the tournament. However, due to his impressive performances there is speculation that he might earn himself a spot in the 23 or even start for New Zealand in the quarter-final.

Bundee Aki (Ireland) – 14/1

Irish centre Bundee Aki was the second favourite for this award early on but has since come back to the pack in the odds. The Connacht man is now a 14/1 shot to be the tournament’s top tryscorer.

Aki is a surprise contender for the award although he did have decent try scoring form at the international level prior to the tournament start with 11 tries across his 48 tests for Ireland.

The 33-year-old has found the form of his life at this Rugby World Cup with four tries in two games, a man of the match performance against Tonga along with the second most clean breaks for a player at the tournament. That means that he's creating a lot of his own opportunities rather than just being in the right place at the right time.

Aki came close to bagging another try in Ireland's win against South Africa as he continued his unstoppable form.

The only thing working against Aki is that Ireland have no ‘easy’ games left in the tournament which means there will likely be less opportunities for him to add to his tally of tries. But given his form we would not be surprised to see him add to his total against Scotland.

Louis Bielle-Biarrey - 14/1

Louis Bielle-Biarrey (20) wasn't even included on the bench for France’s opening night victory against New Zealand but has since found himself as a contender for this award.

Bielle-Biarrey was named on the right-wing against Uruguay to start his tournament with a late try to seal France's victory. That try and performance earned him a spot on the left-wing against Namibia where he would bag a brace of tries.

The Bordeaux man will start again for France against Italy in a game that France are expected to put up a big score in. Given Bielle-Biarrey’s form he could find himself in contention to start or at least make the 23 when the French name their squad for the quarter-final.

Mark Telea (New Zealand) – 16/1

Telea in advance of the Rugby World Cup was expected to light up the tournament following two tries in his opening three All Blacks tests. That made him 7/1 to be the Top Tournament Tryscorer.

The Blues star started the tournament with a bang following a brace of tries against France. That performance put Telea right up among the favourites for this award early on but after being rested against Namibia and only scoring one try in a 96-point trashing of Italy he has fallen back to the pack.

Telea then suffered another blow to his chances of landing top tryscorer honours as he has been rested again for New Zealand’s game against Uruguay.

The Blues player came into the World Cup in flying form in 2023 for his club equalling Doug Howlett’s Blues record for tries in a season (12) while leading the competition in clean breaks (24) and defenders beaten (101).

That talent earned him a new contract with the club until 2026.
