King George VI Chase Betting Favourites

Bravemansgame

The favourite for the 2023 King George VI Chase is Bravemansgame at odds of 7/4 in the antepost betting market.

The eight-year-old gelding trained by Paul Nicholls is one of the quickest horses in training hence his status as favourite. His career record to date from seventeen runs is nine victories, three second-place finishes and three third-place finishes.

At Cheltenham back in March this horse lost out on the hill in the 2023 Gold Cup to come second to winner Galopin Des Champs. The pair battled hard in combat over the last of the 22 fences, but it was the 7/5 favourite, a year younger at seven, who prevailed.

Following the race, the team were beaming with pride from their horse’s performance.

“He’s run an absolute blinder, but he’s just been beaten by a very good horse.” said jockey Harry Cobden.

Trainer Paul Nicholls when speaking about Bravemansgame said, “He couldn’t have done more and got a great ride by Harry” and also vowed to bring the horse back for another crack next year “He’ll be back next year when he’ll be another year stronger, and we’ll have another go.”

His most recent outing on track was a disappointing third in the Punchestown Gold Cup coming behind Galopin Des Champs again, along with winner Fastorslow.

Shishkin

The second favourite for the King George VI Chase is Shishkin at 4/1 according to the latest antepost odds.

The nine-year-old trained by Nicky Henderson who has a terrific record of thirteen victories, one-second finish and one-third from his seventeen excursions on the racetrack.

Shishkin’s most recent showing was at Aintree back in April when he won over the three-mile and one furlong distance in a five-horse field. That day he came ahead of the fast Ahoy Senor by 1.5 lengths. This was his third outing this year with the only blot being a second place finish at Cheltenham in March when he finished behind Envoi Allen by 2.75 lengths.

Galopin Des Champs

The third favourite in the betting for the big race on Boxing Day is Galopin des Champs at 7/1 odds.

The W-P Mullins-trained superstar famously won the Cheltenham Gold Cup back in March. That day he stormed to victory in a dramatic final tussle against Bravemansgame. Galopin Des Champs eventually came out on top up the hill to win by seven lengths.

Following the Gold Cup victory jockey Paul Townend told ITV Racing:

"It wasn't plain sailing that is for sure. Everywhere I went I was running into trouble. But this is a proper, proper horse because he ran three different races and still won a Gold Cup. I was delighted to see it all going on in front of me. It gave me a chance to fill him up after making up a lot of ground.”

His most recent outing was at the Punchestown Gold Cup where he finished 2 1⁄4 lengths back from winner Fastorslow.

From fourteen races Galopin des Champs has nine victories and two second-place finishes to his name.

Allaho

Next up in the betting for the 2023 King George VI is Allaho who has been priced up at odds of 8/1.

The 9-year-old Bay Gelding has a 50% win rate over his jumps career with 8 wins from 16 outings on track. This horse has a track record of success in big events having won the 2021 Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham, a title he defended the following year.

Unfortunately for connections, Allaho was unable to appear at Cheltenham this year for the three-peat after suffering an abdominal bleed in February.

Last time out on track the W P Mullins trained horse won at Punchestown in April of 2022 over a 3m 30y trip. If he can return to top form then he will take all the beating at Kempton Park but there are significant question marks surrounding how he will return after such a long break.

Gerri Colombe

Another horse to watch out for in this year’s King George is Gerri Colombe who has been installed as a 10/1 shot to be first past the post on Boxing Day.

The Gordan Elliot-trained seven-year-old is a consistent scorer on track with eight victories and one second-place finish from his nine career races to date. The only blot on his card came at Cheltenham in this year’s Brown Advisory Novices' Chase where he was denied his eighth victory in a row.

It was not to be for the horse as he lost out in a thriller of a finish between The Real Whacker and Gerri Colombe as Sam Twiston-Davies somehow just kept finding more on The Real Whacker.

The 7-year-old returned to the winners’ podium at Aintree back in April where he came first in a six-horse-field. 7.5 lengths separated Gerri Colombe from his closest challenger in that outing as he landed a grade 1 success.

L'Homme Presse

The eight-year-old gelding trained by Venetia Williams has not been seen on the track since the 26th of December 2022 when the horse unseated his rider. That result capped off a disappointing year for L’Homme Presse.

He was subsequently ruled out in January after veterinary checks following his King George run revealed a few issues.

Following that announcement, Trainer Venetia Williams said: “L’Homme Presse is fine but we’re not going to bring him back into training this season and will focus on next season with him”.

The 8-year-old is seen as a real contender to put his poor form and luck behind him and land his eighth career success from thirteen races in the King George this December.
