NBA Championship Betting Favourites
Boston Celtics
Odds
The Boston Celtics are the favourites to win the NBA Championship at odds of 6/4. Those odds imply that the Celtics have a 40% chance of winning their first NBA Championship since 2008.
Chances
The Celtics were the class of the NBA in the regular season with a record of 64-18, which was far better than the rest of the league with the next best record belonging to the Thunder and Nuggets at 57-25. It’s no mean feat to cross the 60-win threshold and Boston go into the playoffs as the #1 seed thanks to their regular season exploits.
However, Boston have been a very strong regular season team in recent years but have failed to convert that regular season success to postseason glory. This looks like a better team than recent years thanks to the offseason additions of Kristaps Porziņģis and Jrue Holiday however the question mark will still remain over this team until they can prove it in the playoffs.
Verdict
Worthy favourites for the title but odds of 6/4 feel a little short given how many times this franchise have comen up short in recent postseasons.
Denver Nuggets
Odds
The Denver Nuggets are the 3/1 second favourites for the NBA title. Those odds suggest that the Nuggets have a 25% chance of winning back-to-back championships.
Chances
The Nuggets were once again one of the top teams in the NBA in the regular season as they finished the year with a 57-25 mark.
Nikola Jokic is the superstar on this team and the heavy favourite to win a 3rd MVP award in 4 seasons. The big man from Serbia has passing vision and execution which we have not seen since Magic Johnson.
There is plenty of talent around Jokic too with guard Jamal Murray and power forward Aaron Gordon stars in their own right.
Verdict
The Denver Nuggets are the defending NBA Champions after a completely dominant playoff run where they went 16-4 on their way to hoisting the Larry O’Brien trophy.
I would have them as the favourites for this season’s NBA Championship and odds of 3/1 here feel generous to me. They are the team to beat until proven otherwise.
Los Angeles Clippers
Odds
There is a substantial drop in the betting to the LA Clippers who are next up at odds of 11/1. Those odds imply that the Clippers have an 8.3% chance of ending the season as champions.
Chances
The Clippers are an interesting team to keep an eye out for in the playoffs. They finished the regular season with the 4th seed after compiling a 51-31 record.
They started off slow this season while trying to work out their go-to rotation but then went on a heater before cooling off a bit in recent weeks.
The talent on their roster is undeniable, Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, James Harden and Russell Westbrook (to a lesser extent) are true stars in this league. After experimenting with different lineups it looks like the Clippers understand who they are as a team now and with Kawhi Leonard showing signs of his best they could be hard beat in these playoffs.
Verdict
At 11/1 they are an interesting bet. They have the talent of a championship team but the worry is that apart from Kawhi this is a team of players (Harden, Westbrook, and George) that have underachieved in the playoffs during their careers.
