A 2018 Irish General Election looks to be on the cards after it was backed into a heavy odds-on shot by punters as the Garda whistleblower controversy rumbles on.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Fianna Fáil leader Michéal Martin are due to hold talks today in a further bid to avoid an early General Election.

Although, punters have already voted with their cash backing the poll to take place in 2018 into 1/4 from 1/2 over the weekend.""

As a result, a General Election to happen before the end of 2017 is now available at 5/2 having been a 6/4 shot before the weekend.

Leo Varadkar remains the 5/6 favourite to remain as Taoiseach after the next General Election with Michéal Martin even money, and Sinn Fein’s Mary Lou-McDonald and Gerry Adams 50/1 and 66/1 outsiders respectively.
